Heinz packet found inside woman who believed she was suffering from Crohn's

A woman who thought she was suffering from Crohn’s disease for six years found the “sauce” of the problem when doctors discovered pieces of a Heinz sauce packet in the lining of her intestine.

The 41-year-old woman went to doctors after she experienced abdominal pain and bloating that was similar to Crohn’s disease symptoms, an inflammatory bowel disorder, the British Medical Journal said in a report.

Doctors at Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospital in Britain’s Slough monitored the symptoms and gave her standard treatment for the disease — but to no avail. The woman’s symptoms became so severe that doctors opted for keyhole surgery.

Surgeons discovered “an inflammatory mass” that was two pieces of plastic with the words “Heinz” printed on them.

I've said this before, but in the early 1980s, a canned food company redid the label on canned corn, removing, "open can/heat/serve", and adding the relatively new 800 number on the can.

The company got a lot of calls by panicked people requesting help.

The company added back instructions.

(I guess on the bright side, people really do read labels.)

“I guess on the bright side, people really do read labels.”

Yup, there are a whole lot of dumb people. That’s why when you by a hammer or a screwdriver it might come with a warning like “This is not a toy!”. Lotta idiots in the world.

You might wish to send a letter to the Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She’s arguably the best in the country based on her position and hospital.

If she calls it Crohn’s (she does) that’s good enough for me.

Interesting.

It was pretty funny when he was first diagnosed. My wife is into healthy foods. teas, tinctures etc.

When the doctor said no whole wheat, no seeds, no fruit, no vegetables etc, she just about choked.

I'm a pathologist and find myself doing the same at times. I'm just pointing out that technically it's improper terminology. If you're so inclined check the WHO manuals on disease classification which use the proper form. Say what you will about the UN these are the gold standard on the subject.

Your patients can’t correct you so you can use whatever terminology you want.

You’re probably right. I always thought ‘s was kind of clunky.

So, Heinz is now negligent for not printing a warning and will get to pay for the whole debacle
