Apple releases iOS and macOS updates with a mitigation for Spectre

Apple just released iOS 11.2.2 with some Safari and WebKit improvements to mitigate the Spectre vulnerability. macOS is also receiving an update. It’s a supplemental update to macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 and it includes the same fix.

As always, you should update your devices with the latest security patches. In this case, Meltdown and Spectre are serious vulnerabilities. With Meltdown, a malicious application running on an unpatched device can read the unencrypted kernel memory. You don’t want anyone to grab your password and private encryption keys.

Meltdown was already addressed in previous updates. iOS 11.2, macOS 10.13.2 and tvOS 11.2 already included mitigations for Meltdown. Apple Watch chips aren’t affected by Meltdown.

Spectre isn’t as serious as it only breaks the isolation between multiple applications. But it can be exploited using JavaScript in a web browser. That’s why it’s important to fix it before somebody figures out how to distribute malicious JavaScript code in an ad unit.

On your iPhone or iPad, head over to the Settings app, then tap on General and Software Update. On your Mac, open the Mac App Store and check for updates.

Apple has released updates for both Macs and iOS devices to mitigate against Spectre flaw in Intel and Apple's iOS A series processors. Apple has already mitigated against the Meltdown flaw in the Intel processors back in December. This update also contains an updated Safari with built-in protections. — PING!

Tangentially related...The December release of MacOS has totally hosed my WiFi connectivity. It stop soon working 2 to 4 tiimes our hour now after being solid since I bought this machine about 3 or 4 years ago.

The irony is that I bought my current MacBook Pro because the last one (ca 2008) ha don’t such horrible WiFi problems that it was unusable.

Now my new machine is as bad as the one it replaced.

I’m not alone, either. Google “Mac High Sierra WiFi” and you will find this is widespread. The proposed fixes are the exact same ones that were suggested four years ago and didn’t work then. Apple is really incompetent at WiFi implementation.

Sorry to hear about your problems. I have an old iMac that can’t be updated any further than it already has been. I also have a 2011 MacBookPro that has 10.9.5 on it. I’ve never updated it any further because this has worked fine for what I do with it. I don’t plan on updating it either, because whenever I’ve updated the OS in the past, something has always been screwed up, and I’m not about to deal with that kind of crap at this point in my life.

Are you using 802.1ac or 802.1.g?
Mine has been working flawless on 802.1ac

Downloaded last night....my iMac is powered thru a UPS battery backup, and iMac controls the UPS configuration thru a USB connection. During the upload, the install triggered a shutdown of my UPS and thus a shutdown of my iMac in the middle of the install!!!!! In essence, it committed suicide via of the UPS and needless to say, it messed up the install bigly...ech.
I use Carbon Copy Cloner every midnight (except weekends) to do a back up of the machine. I ended up doing a re-boot up off the backup drive using last Friday’s CCC’ backup, then restored my machine’s HD to the Friday’s image. Once that was done, I shut back down, plugged into a regular wall outlet and re-installed the security patch successfully.

It’s an ASUS RT-AC68U Dual-Band (pretty sure — I’m not home right now).

I’ve reset it and loaded latest firmware a couple weeks ago.

Just update my iMac and a bunch of the icons in the launchpad are now a piece of paper with a ruler, pencil and a paint brush. Stupid updates.
