Joyless Town Wants Grandmother To Take Volkswagen Beetle Out Of Tree

Janis Zettel of Clearfield City, Utah was given a non-running ‘73 Volkswagen Super Beetle as a gift by her son. While neither her nor her son was that interested in getting the Beetle running, Zettel liked the car, which she named Lucy and painted to look like a ladybug. Deciding the car made her happier as lawn art, she had it placed in a tree in their front yard. Now, Clearfield officials are demanding it be removed because, I suppose, they hate fun. The Super Beetle had its engine removed and most of the interior stripped prior to being made arboreal. A neighbor with a forklift (that’s handy!) placed the VW in the tree, and the car was bolted and chained securely to the tree. To insure everything was safe, Zettel arranged for the Clearfield City Arborist to inspect the car in the tree to be sure it was stable and didn’t pose a danger to the tree or others. According to Zettel, the arborist “approved it and said it is no danger to the tree and will not cause the tree to fall down.”

Utah seems pretty joyless in general to me.

Visit whatever - and move on...

If it was a Japanese Beetle I could recommend a trap that would get rid of it. German Beetle, I’m not so sure...

Gosh, maybe she should think about tidying up her yard and maybe it wouldn't look like a salvage yard. Just sayin'.

I’m with the hippy lady. Old curmudgeon complainers should get a pie in the face.

Her property, let her do what she wants.

Joyless Utah. Reminds me of the old joke:

Q: "What's Mormon foreplay?"

A: "Two hours at Baskin-Robbins."

Utah seems pretty joyless in general to me.

Been to SLC a few times for conferences. They make it difficult to catch a buzz. Beer on tap can only be up to 3.2%. Wine cant be sold in grocery stores. They have their own wine shop controlled by the State just like liquor.

That yard looks like a junk yard. i would not be happy to have that mess in my neighborhood driving down my property value.

I don’t know... I think the tree beetle takes something away from her weed-filled gutters...

I don’t know. Kind of looks like crap. And it’s gonna look worse, as the paint fades and the rubber rots and the metal rusts, in relatively short order it’s gonna look like junk in a tree.

Actually, that Beetle is about the only thing on her property that looks halfway nice.

That whole place looks slightly better than a junk yard.

Her house looks like crap. Maybe if she cleaned up the yard some I would agree with her.
