FULL TITLE: Who pushed the button? Anger in Hawaii over Civil Defense bungle that told terrified islanders a MISSILE was rocketing towards them causing thousands to flee to bomb shelters and pray for their lives
Anger is spreading in Hawaii after a Civil Defense bungle on Saturday morning, when a mistaken alert warning of an inbound ballistic missile sent thousands fleeing for shelter.
Panicked Hawaiians ran for their lives and even lowered loved ones through manhole covers after receiving the alert at 8.07am local time.
It read: 'BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL'.
A similar message flashed up on local television networks and brought live sports games to a halt. Actor Jim Carrey, like many others, said he woke up thinking he had 'ten minutes to live'.
The false alarm was caused by a Hawaii Emergency Management Agency employee who 'pushed the wrong buttons' during an internal drill timed to coincide with a shift handover.
Incredibly, officials said the employee who made the mistake wasn't aware of it until mobile phones in the command center began displaying the alert.
'This guy feels bad, right. He's not doing this on purpose - it was a mistake on his part and he feels terrible about it,' said EMA Administrator Vern Miyagi in a press conference Saturday afternoon.
Miyagi, a retired Army major general, said the employee had been with the agency for 'a while' and that he would be 'counseled and drilled so this never happens again' - but stopped short of saying whether there would be disciplinary measures.

A. this is not funny and
B. Someone's in for an ass kicking.
Maybe the guy was hungover.
Well, he’ll never make that mistake again...
So, the next time it gets pushed when it really counts, will anyone pay attention to the warnings?
Israelis have to do this on a regular basis. Maybe some liberals (unlikely) will understand the fear people live with everyday in Israel and why they go after the scum in Gaza.
Maybe they’ll come with a) a better system (more dummy proof) and b) a better shelter system.
These folks were in a panic, today....understandably so.
Civil Defense? What decade...no what century do they think we’re living in?
Thirty-five minutes later?
Or did it take them thirty-five minutes to send out the all-clear message?
Sounds like the ultimate oh sh!t moment.
Maybe Hawaiians are night owls and sleep late weekends.. maybe only 10% of the pop even noticed the warning.
A shift change from the graveyard shift to morning shift? Sounds like a shift-hole.
Mr Miyagi, "Bomb ON, Bomb OFF"
Nothing like it seemingly happening for real to make believers out of people. Gets people thinking of what they really need to do.
Maybe theyll come with a) a better system (more dummy proof) and b) a better shelter system.
How about doing away with Rocket Man?
I’d be willing too put a ten-spot on who CNN and the WaPo will pin the blame.
It take 2 officers to turn the missile key to launch a Minuteman III missile, yet it only takes one person to bump a button to freak an entire state out. I don’t blame the person. Any person can make a mistake. I blame a government that doesn’t consider the implications when they design an emergency management system. Shades of the Healthcare website roll-out.
Wonder how many women got sudden Wienstein treatment from the nearest guy..... and then an awkward apology 20 minutes later?
Yeah. The same person who hired Craig Livingstone.
