A student who flushed her hamster down the toilet when Spirit told her she couldn't fly home with it, is now attempting to sue the airline for causing emotional distress.
Aldecosea, a Miami Beach High graduate, insists her doctor approved her hamster as a certified emotional support animal, and had the medical certificate to prove it when she went to the airport.
She's bought the adorable rodent after developing a large but benign growth in her neck last year.
'She was so loving. It was like she knew I needed somebody,' said Aldecosea, a six-feet tall volleyball star who helped lead her school, Miami Beach to back-to-back National District Championships and was named Most Valuable Player, before joining Barry University in Florida where she joined the volleyball team.

Just IMO, if she were that in love with the hamster she wouldn’t have flushed it. I think worst case I’d have just set the cage and hamster down in the airport somewhere. However, if she’d just put the animal in her bag and not made a huge production out of the situation, no one would have ever known she had it.

Her name is not a common one either so any basic Internet search on "Belen Aldecosea" will yield immediate results on her for the next hundred years. So looks like she flushed her life down the drain as well.
We need to stop enabling mentally ill people.
I have a friend who rents apartments to college students (I do NOT envy her) - there is a clear “no pets” clause in the lease, yet she had a renter who requested to bring a support dog, which she hadn’t even yet obtained or gotten any documentation she needed one. People are trying to use the ADA to be perpetual infants who need coddling and animals to deal with life, or simply to bring pets into forbidden places.
I really like them - which surprises me. This one has quite a personality. I'll be sad when she dies.
She is not my "emotional support hamster" but I wouldn't be able bring myself to flush her down a toilet just to make a flight. The screaming hamsters would haunt me the rest of my days.
To all the people who think this is ‘animal cruelty’. Never worked on a farm have you? Or spent much time backpacking.
I guess she could have stomped on its head before she flushed it. But she probably didn’t grow up on a farm.
Rich people (most Americans are rich) get so divorced from reality. I understand that sadist cruelty to animals should not be allowed. But people’s definition of cruelty now is ridiculous.
The suit is frivolous. Some of the comments are silly. I recommend you go out bow hunting next fall. Take a bad shot and track a wounded, suffering, deer for a mile. And then it eat. Cause that is reality. Everything eats everything out there and it ain’t pretty.

all of us plumbers know if an elephant clogs up the pipe you suck the air out through it’s trunk. Deflate the elephant and then pump it back up after it’s removed. Surprised you don’t know that.
