I am certain they did it to show they were considering minorities. I would even go so far as to venture there were discussions that took place to ensure that the process was inclusive of minorities.

I have the same suspicions you do. When this happens, one can't help but suspect that those voting for a minority because they're a minority are over-compensating for their racism.
