Six U.S. intelligence agencies warn against using Huawei phones

Six intelligence officials, including the heads of the CIA, FBI, and NSA, have told the Senate Intelligence Committee that they would not recommend that U.S. citizens use smartphones from the Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE, reports CNBC. As FBI director Chris Wray told the committee:

“We’re deeply concerned about the risks of allowing any company or entity that is beholden to foreign governments that don’t share our values to gain positions of power inside our telecommunications networks. That provides the capacity to exert pressure or control over our telecommunications infrastructure. It provides the capacity to maliciously modify or steal information. And it provides the capacity to conduct undetected espionage.”

In response to the intelligence officials warnings, a spokesperson for Huawei said:

“Huawei is aware of a range of U.S. government activities seemingly aimed at inhibiting Huawei’s business in the U.S. market. Huawei is trusted by governments and customers in 170 countries worldwide and poses no greater cybersecurity risk than any ICT vendor, sharing as we do common global supply chains and production capabilities.”

Huawei has been trying to enter the U.S. market as of late. One failed attempt saw a partnership with AT&T later called off.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Chinese phones sucked up all the calls, texts, and websites and sent them to China for analysis. It is a communist country, and as such has no idea of right or wrong.

Yep. Don't even have to read any further. "Chinese" === electronic spy.

This is a very interesting Youtube video from a couple of guys motorcycling through china. It’s an interesting window to how a government can really muck things up in your personal life and posessions:

I doubt they suck up everything, but wouldn’t doubt that there are some “wake up” functions for targeted individuals.

My favorite Chinese hardware story is how they stole the entire plans of India’s nuke sub. The Chinese setup a cellphone booth, and offered pendrives as giveaways for coming in to checkout the phones. The booth was setup on the road towards the dockyards. Six month later, the plans appeared in Beijing. Seems the pendrives activated six months after the give away, and downloaded the plans. Since then, Chinese cell phones are banned in India.

“Don’t use any phones made in China!......................”

What cell phones are not made in China or without internal critical electronic gear made in China?

humm and we’re suppose to listen to the lying fibbing CIA, FBI, and NSA. Big emphasis on the FBI. My gut feeling is these phones are more of a threat to the profit margins of Apple and other American companies phones that are extremely over priced. Hummm I wonder how much stock these leaders of the intelligence agencies have invested in these companies, and how much of those profits are going to the Democratic party. It make’s one wonder if these phones are a real threat or just a drummed up threat.

Isn’t everything made in China or Mexico?

Pretty much assembled there for multiple companies, but these two are thought be wholly controlled by the Chinese government.

I’d rather use a Google Pixel phone if I’m on Android.

It would be a better choice than one of these two makes. It's design and software additions are controlled by Google, not the Chinese Government.
