Four people have died after after a huge explosion demolished a grocery store and the flat above it in Leicester.
Passers-by dug through the burning wreckage of Western Park Stores with their bare hands as emergency services raced to the scene, with flames shooting 50ft into the air.
The cause of the explosion, which occurred at 7:20pm last night while the grocery shop and its neighbouring takeaway restaurant and bar were open, remained a mystery today with gas engineers on site.
Eight people were taken to hospital with injuries and this morning it emerged that four have died, while one person remains in critical condition.
Police and fire chiefs revealed they are still searching for 'missing' people, who remain unaccounted for, and may still be trapped in the building. Firefighters continued to battle the flames this morning and they cannot enter the site to search the wreckage for survivors until it is deemed safe.
Leicestershire Police, who had earlier declared a 'major incident', said nothing 'at this stage' linked it to terrorism.

Okay, had to dig way down in story to see it was Islamic owned. How much further, if ever, whether this is bomb making stuff at the site if it wasn’t destroyed in the explosion. My money is on terrorism, planned and aborted early.

I'm not sure if it was a gas explosion, maybe something to do with the electric as they had a lot of spirits in there.
Explosion then Secondary fire? It was a liquor store.
A commenter on the Daily Mail suggested a possibility of someone illegally altering the gas supply. There was a explosion in New York City a few years back. Same result, collapsed building. The cause? Building occupants tampered with the gas line in order to steal gas.

I suggest we said Sheriff Israel over there. If he can’t figure out the cause of the explosion, at least he’d be good at keeping people away from the crime scene.
< speculation>I have no expertise or experience, but I would not be surprised if the initial explosion consumed all the oxygen, and ruptured what had been a leaking gas line. Once the oxygen level normalized, some source of ignition found its way to the leak.
About 25 years ago there was a convenience store blown sky high by a gas explosion in NJ — either Plainfield or North Plainfield. My father could see the fire easily and he was in Manhattan — over ten miles I think.
Yep, we were outside at recess when a residence 10 blocks away from the school went up due to a gas explosion. A thunderous boom and we could clearly see airborne debris from our vantage point. Across the street from the house was a corner market/liquor store. The blast blew out the windows of the store along with most of their stock. Hours later, on our way home, we drove by the scene, the smell of booze was almost overpowering.
Out of curiosity I looked up the location on google maps. A hispanic market is where the house once stood, ( It’s a corner lot, probably too valuable to rebuild a home on), a bank now resides where the market/liquor store once stood.)

I’d rather the Sheriff goes to jail. What he did is clearly criminal. And the shootings were a direct consequence of his illegal actions.
