If your gonna fry squirrel, ya have to marinate it first. Either way, it's all muscle. They are gymnast.

Grey squirrel legs would be bigger than KFC chicken legs, that’s for sure.

Sometimes I call it Kentucky Fried Chick because the Colonel fries them young and small. I prefer Famous Recipe because you actually get some meat.

I did eat some once, raised for meat by a co-worker and family broght into work for lunch. I wouldn't eat it again, and it wasn't too bad but certainly not chicken.

And if I were younger and starving and my kids starving, I would probably eat the subject animals over bugs. Neighbor's daughter married a nice guy from Missouri whose family was poor growing up and hunted and ate squirrel regularly.

Yes; they are by nature conservative on several points, don’t believe in spreading the wealth (socialism), seem comfortable with their gender and sex-separated tasks, don’t seem tribal like some other animals, and they are very pro-life.

My grandmother made that. I loved it.

I don't get up-close friendly with them any more, just put food out for whomever gets to it first. I don't buy them unsalted roasted peanuts which I would but stores don't seem to have them in bulk. And nuts are too expensive for special treats. I even used to help crack the shells of Brazil nuts for them :-) to save wear and tear on their teeth, not that it necessarily matters.

That was quite a compensium on all things squirrel. They can be nuisances, go beserk if they get in the house and get trapped. So I have to create an escape route for them which may take a few tries for them to find it.

Right now a possum has seemed to have displaced the residence of chipmunks under my porch. Chipmunks hibernate here; bigger squirrels don't. And chipmunks will dig almost anything you plant if you don't spend a lot of effort protecting it.

I still would never hunt them or inentionally hurt them.

Thank you. They are fun to watch.

MarMema, good to see you are still posting, haven't seen you for awhile. Hope you and family are well.

I've never forgotten your book recommendation, Alone in the Taiga I think it was, have done folllow-up on youtube. RT and at least one other did good documentaries on Agafiya, the only survivor, can never be sure how she is doing due to time delays.

She even was up to speed on the Antichrist in one of the documentaries. She reads the bible daily in Old Slavonic, aloud, in a singsong-like voice.

We have fox squirrels all over the place in the Ozarks... they hang around the pine woods while the grays prefer deciduous trees.

I used to hunt squirrel and rabbit and grouse as a kid. My older brother never tried the squirrel. “That’s just a rat with a furry tail!”

I’m guessing that a squirrel eating nuts and whatever in the woods tastes a lot different than a rat caught while foraging through the garbage in an alley. Farm rats might be okay with a feast of various grains on their menu.

Squirrels have a distinct but not unpleasant odor that can be detected some distance away.
Muskrats smell like orange oil.
Groundhogs smell like clean earth and often of vegetation... they suds themselves regularly with certain plant roots and they actually dig a latrine for the purpose which they fill in every so often to prevent odors. I had one as a pet who loved to wash himself with soap- he knew exactly what soap was good for the first time he found a bar.

Rats are different, they have a pungent unclean odor that reveals their presence because they urinate everywhere they go and don’t mind nesting in it, either. They groom themselves, but what’s the point when they live in trash... I guess it serves well to keep them off the menu.

I lightly season and flour then fry my squirrel in bacon grease. Then it goes in a roasting pan with wine for about 60 minutes and its falling off the bone. I serve it with rice, gravy and biscuits.

I make a hella venison roast too. You can cut it with a fork. :-)

The first I think is a gray hybrid, think I saw a pair of smaller less interbred last year. It's name I hope will come to me; it had to do with the kink in its tail IIRC.

It came to me. I named the gray one in my first photo Clipper. Don't know what that has to do with it's tail.

They seem to respond to names, sounds, or maybe just voice recognition. Anyway I name my favorite ones.
