Backyard camera catches talking crow saying 'Hello' to squirrel

A wild crow that was hand-raised by an Ontario veterinarian as an infant was caught on camera saying "Hello" to a squirrel in the woman's back yard.

Dr. Kristy Hiltz, a veterinarian at Sherbrooke Heights Animal Hospital in Peterborough, said her husband placed a GoPro camera near a feeder in their back yard and it recently captured the moment a crow landed on a branch near a feasting squirrel and said "Hello" twice.

Hiltz said the crow was one of five she and her family cared for in the summer of 2011 after their nest fell out of a tree and their mother could not be found. The four crows that survived eventually joined a nearby group of crows, but Hiltz and her family still occasionally spot the crows and hear their voices.

She said the family had tried to teach the crows to say "Fred," but they instead ended up picking up the word "hello."

Nice story.

I had no idea crows could be taught to talk. I looked it up, and found they can mimic other birds, animals, as well as can be taught to speak words, or I s’pose mimic words just like Democrats.

Crows are much smarter than Democrats; they can figure things out for themselves and they prefer to work for a reward rather than just sit there waiting for someone to fill the feeder.

Ravens, too. If they can get seagulls and terns to talk, a remake of “Birds” could have a whole new dimension.

Crows are territorial, punctual, family orientated too. Crows harass Red Tailed Hawks..that territorial thing to a point.. most of the time
the hawk will either wait them out while sitting in a tree...or if out in the open, try to catch a thermal and ride it up till the crows give up...crows will only go so far up..occasionally, if you are lucky enough to see it,the hawk will get pissed while their diving all around the hawk...the hawk will do a flip over on it’s back and flash those talons....older crows usually get the hint. Younger ones learn one way or another.

Ever notice crows down south have a southern accent? Crows up north have an annoying Caw, Caw, while down south it's a slower Caawww, Caawww. Kind of like the difference between northerners and southerners.

" Crows harass Red Tailed Hawks"

And mockingbirds harass crows. It is always so funny seeing a feisty little mockingbird flying across the sky, scolding and chasing a crow.

Listen to a flock of crows warn other birds and critters when a hawk is in the area: They scream “Hork, Hork, Hork!!!”

I kid you not;)

We live on a river and it is spring. Everything is honking and calling. It sounds just like Jurassic Park.

The crows here let the world know when my dog is out. Still sounds like an excited murder of crows, same as when the hawks or eagles are hunting. We do have one summer bird who sounds just like an old-fashioned telephone or an electronic alert. Damned thing fools me every time.

I feed crows every day, and they’ve never said anything. They have followed me to the mailbox and back, cawing at me when I’m late bringing out the food.
