In my Southern town, a backyard chicken coop usually belonged to a Depression survivor who also maintained a Victory Garden long after WWII.
Residents finally got tired of the nonstop crowing & had them banned.
Isn’t America wonderful? No seriously! A bunch of people with far more money than they need to survive in the Bay Area have taken up a hobby that they are ill-equipped for — raising chickens on a small-scale. So some entreprising individual is offering a service to help separate them from some of their money.
WOW! I’ve been raising egg laying birds for the last 15 years! I just bought 10 baby chicks today! $3.50 each.
yes. my Father had to clean the chicken coop before he was permitted to go to school in the morning. the chickens provided food for the family, but they were DEFINITELY NOT any kind of status symbol! About all they did was publicly announce the family’s poverty, is all.
(Dad grew to so dislike this chore... that he never ate any chicken or turkey for the rest of his life. Including at Thanksgiving...no turkey for Father! He just had a pastrami sandwich and let it go at that. smile smile smile
Most chickens that I have known over the years don't really go in for the 'modern' interior designs but are more rustic and simple in their tastes...............
Now that’s funny. Its really killing two birds with one stone.
Most useful ever ... that’s for sure. Good luck with the new flock. We might be starting over too.
However ... we don’t do high-end either. We get our chicks either mail-order or from the farm supply store.
Do you get your chicks for free?
That’s what stew pots are for.
I use Murray McMurray out of Iowa - really close to me and great selection/health.
But - not this Spring. No place to put them. :(
Oh, trust me...it’ll be RUSTIC, LOL!
......and they prefer ‘Earth tones’..............
I raised 108 chickens one year for 4H. Sold them to the 4H bbq that spring. Never again. A handful were pets but the majority were mean. All were nasty. Took the pets out to the farm to the extreme pleasure of the hawks and coyotes.
There is a chicken ping? I want on it. I have 4 girls and they are a hoot. They love to talk to me and tell me how things are going.
I have also started beekeeping. I lost my hive to verroa mites last year. My queen and her entourage arrive in a few weeks. Late start this year due to the cold weather.
I am raising two teenage boys. So I figure this is a good way to teach them about the birds and the bees.
They know.....trust me, they know.................
Sad but true, however it was a great message to get Mom to support my idea.
The youngest just had a birthday. 11 girlfriends. He had them separated by groups. He told one group, his birthday was in February, so they each got him handmade cards and cookies. The second group he told them that his birthday was March 1st. Same song and dance. But on his real birthday, there were 5 girls at the house all vying for his admiration. I could not stop laughing.
Everyone was good and understood that he deserved the attention. (Mom passed away a few months ago and he never told anyone for the longest time).
Now tonight, he has a wrestling banquet and can only take one girl. I am not aloud to know who until later tonight.
He has a big heart for everyone and sticks up for the kids that get bullied. Always has and he gets respect from his peers and teachers for helping kids fit in.
since when has having a chicken coop in your back yard become a status symbol or a sign of purported affluence?
Jed Clampitt made it cool!
I see. Yes, Jed Clampitt .... good point!
ha!
you nailed it, I guess... ha!
SillyCon Valley has gone to the birds. (and their birds can’t even fly) ha ha ha!
When I was in 8th grade, I had 5 girlfriends.
I juggled them fairly well, since no two had the same classes with me at the same time, even lunch!
It all went well until our Christmas concert. I was in Chorus, with one of them. We were scheduled to give our show to various classes at two different times that afternoon.
Little did I realize that ALL these girls would be present at the same time.
You can imagine what happened..................
I feel your pain. Luckily for me, everything was okay, but there was a lot estrogen in the air.
I just found out that they are not aloud to bring girlfriends to the banquet. So he is safe for tonight.
I just hope that you did not sustain any long term injuries.
I used to date the girls right after they broke up with their boyfriends. Sometimes it did not end well for me, but for the most part I learned what made them happy and what broke them up. My wife and I were married for 19 years and we were the couple most likely NOT to succeed. We had a good run until cancer took over.
