Five years ago, when actor Michael Douglas candidly revealed that his throat cancer was linked to having oral sex, two things happened.
He made headlines that mortified his family. And he helped publicize the fact that a pervasive, sexually transmitted virus called HPV was unleashing an epidemic of oral cancer among men.
Since then, scientists have made headway in figuring out why HPV, the human papillomavirus, has this glaring gender bias. Men are four times more likely than women to be diagnosed with oral cancer, a hard-to-detect, hard-to-treat disease that has overtaken cervical cancer as the most common HPV-related malignancy in the United States.
To be sure, changes in sexual norms over the last few generations have played a role in this alarming trend. But research increasingly shows the real problem is something men have practically no control over: their immune response.

And it takes a specific strain of hpv under individual conditions. Most HPV virus’s clear up on their own. Just like not everyone who smokes gets lung cancer. “ There are over 100 different kinds of HPV. “
This subject was a big interest to me at one point as I was trying to make an educated decision on whether to vaccinate my child.
After the whole Clinton and Monica thing in the ‘90s it became much more common with teens who opted for Bill’s view that it wasn’t actual sex.

The fact is that these sensationalist "medical studies" come out about once a week. They're not really peer reviewed, and have some questionable methodology...and then they're contradicted by other non peer-reviewed studies of questionable methodology. The whole vicious cycle continues.
And that doesn't cover reviewers who "cherry pick" the evidence to reach the pre-determined conclusions that they wanted to reach.
Who knows what the hell is true these days? The media sure isn't telling us, and neither is the medical profession.
There are over 100 variants of HPV...approx 32 0f them are associated with cancer...the newest hpv vaccine still doesnt cover all of them...either total hpv or cancer associated hpv...the vaccine covers the most common...but if everyone keep spreading hpv, soon the least common variant may become prevalent..and bingo..the vaccine may not protect..people who.think.that they are safe may not be safe. And the disease will keep on spreading. Abstinence may be the only protection...sit on your hands and keep your mouth shut.

Someone close to me lost his tongue, saliva glands, and all lymph glands in his neck. His doctor said he probably picked up the hpv 30 years earlier. Long before he got married.
