Cirque du Soleil star Yann Arnaud plunges to death during Florida show
nbc ^

Arnaud had been performing in Cirque shows for 15 years and was considered one of the company's most experienced entertainers, President and Chief Executive Daniel Lamarre told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"We were very surprised, considering his experience, that something like that happened," said Lamarre, speaking from Tampa, where he had flown to be with the show's cast. "I cannot describe to you how the people feel. It's terrible."

The death is the third involving a Cirque performer in the company's 34 years, Lamarre said, adding that the aerial strap act was seen as a relatively safe number. Julian Martinez, a spectator who witnessed the accident, told NBC affiliate WFLA: "It was awful. You heard all the cries of the audience. There were children there, and they were freaking out."

Lamarre said he couldn't share details about the incident involving Arnaud, a husband and father of two young children.

"We are offering our full and transparent collaboration to the authorities as they look into the circumstances of this accident," the company said in a statement, adding that the last two shows of Volta planned for Tampa on Sunday had been canceled.

I took a rental car on a quest for a surfable spot on the East side of Guadalupe. Found the surf and got the deposit back. Luckily they did not look under the car. Goat paths are rough on the undercarriage. Had a non surfing friend from PA with me. He swore to never get in another car with me on a mountain again. Some of the best surf of my life and had to hit it alone.

I had a huge boulder almost “get” or family on that road back around 1987.

I don’t know, watch the video. Assuming they are approximately 6 feet tall, I’d say that the distance he fell was 3-4 times his height, so 24-30 feet fall.

I agree. At least 20 feet.

However, if you measure from the soles of his feet, and not from his outstretched hand, it could be 15.

In any event, he had a lot of momentum swinging back.

Personally, I do not enjoy circus-style entertainment where someone is risking death - tight rope, trapeze, snake charmer, lion tamer.

But, I very much enjoy Formula One racing, and NFL Football, and classic boxing matches, and war documentaries, so maybe it's just an issue of personal taste.

I look at some of the things I did as a kid (jumping from one garage roof to another, etc.) and couldn’t imagine trying these things today (four decades later) - even though I’m a foot taller. I’m old now...

I read that thread when it was posted . Now I sit here in my husbands hospital room after he fell off a ladder March 13 . He’s had 4 surgeries due to compartment syndrome . Tuesday afternoon they will amputate his left leg just above the knee .

A lot of people are afraid of heights; not me, I’m afraid of widths.

Anyway, RIP Yann Arnaud

“It is always very unsettling when someone who is superlatively qualified for a dangerous job dies doing it.”

My sky diving hobby lasted 5 jumps. One morning I was watching CNN while getting ready to go jump. They had a beautiful video of 3 professional sky divers plunging to their deaths when a stunt went wrong. I decided that hobby was not for me right then.
