You raise an interesting and important point. Ordinarily, one would think the best strategy is to not try to aggravate your opposition by 'sticking your thumb in their eye'. However, it is clear that the left are not interested in any type of dialogue or compromise. They want to destroy, or at least silence those who don't agree with them and/or who pose an obstacle or threat to their world view. They may occasionally give the appearance of being reasonable and a willingness to compromise, but that's just strategy - not a true olive branch. They are like the 'terminator' - they can't be reasoned with, and they will not stop.
Therefore, I see no reason, other than feeding public perception, to placate the left. Trump might as well stick his thumb in their eye.
