Karl Schmid, an on-camera reporter for ABC’s Los Angeles affiliate, came out as HIV positive on Friday night in a powerful Facebook post about stigma and acceptance.
The 37-year-old Australian import covers human interest stories and Hollywood on ABC7, reporting from events like the Academy Awards and the annual Vanity Fair Oscar party. After a decade living with HIV, Schmid said he came forward despite numerous industry peers urging him to stay quiet.
“For 10 years I’ve struggled with ‘do I or don’t I?’ For ten years the stigma and industry professionals have said, ‘don’t! It’ll ruin you,”’ wrote Schmid.
“But here’s the thing. I’m me. I’m just like you. I have a big heart and I want to be loved and accepted. I may be on TV from time to time, but at the end of the day I’m just an average guy who wants want we all want. To be accepted and loved by our friends and family and to be encouraged by our peers,” he said.
The post tagged charity T-shirt project The AIDS Memorial, which shares stories of “love, loss and remembrance” of those affected by the disease.

Yeah, it’s no one else’s business so long as he is not acting unsafely toward anyone.... so what is the need to air his private business? Oh, right, to be acclaimed and admired as so “brave” for telling the world about his condition. I actually have several very serious medical conditions I live with, but I don’t see any reason to publicize private matters.

I don’t know if you’ve ever seen someone in the end stages of AIDS, but there’s not a whole lot of joy involved in waking up in the morning - or at any other time. Major misery.

When people die of AIDS now days, the newspapers don’t report they died of AIDS. So many in their 40s-50s die early because of it but the papers usually say it was some sort of respiratory issues. I guess saying people died of AIDS isn’t PC.
I’ve never heard of the guy until tonight. I googled and read that he’s homo.

HIV has been known about this guy's entire life. He, no doubt, grew up learning all about the risks, but (probably) chose to live a risky homo lifestyle anyway.
This is an all too common occurrence among gay men. Apparently, their depraved lust is so powerful, not even the specter of death can dissuade them from their hedonistic ways.
Praise God for the medicines that make it so HIV is no longer a death sentence. Yes “prevention” is the cure but children often don’t have a choice if they’re born to someone HIV+.
Also, people make mistakes! Drug addicts, everyone... thank God for second chances.
