Well the "Vikings" were the warrior-traders who went to war and trade in England, coastal France and Sicily. Many if not all settled down there -- in England after they were subdued by Aethelstan they were absorbed into the northern English (Yorkshiremen, Mancusians, Liverpudlians etc.) and into the Scottish and Irish.

In Normande they sound got franconized. Ditto in Sicily etc.

their culture was "lower" in terms of literature, art etc. compared to the Roman based cultures so they were easily absorbed. In England they influenced but even there were absorbed.

Yet the Geats and Swedes and Danes also included farmers who stayed behind -- the more intrepid migrated while the ones left were not quite so brave.

However all of that is irrelevant to why modern day Swedes are the way they are -- after all all barbarians get civilized and "weak" -- look at the Stoic Romans who became the sensuous Italians, look at the fierce Bedos who became the obese Saudis etc.

The Vikings left Sweden. Why shouldn't they? Sweden is a cold and harsh place. Some migrated to northern France, where they were known as the Normen (North-men). From there, in 1066, they invaded England and became the aristocracy there.

So who was left in Sweden? The slaves the Vikings brought back from elsewhere, and the ones too timid to go adventuring.

Same thing that happened to the Romans. The original Romans marched all around the world. Many settled elsewhere. Meanwhile, millions of slaves were imported into Rome from elsewhere.

Probably wouldn't find a Swedish/Guntish viking in England -- broadly speaking the Norse went to Ireland and west to Iceland and beyond, the Danes to England and the Swedes east into Russia and down to the Black Sea.

The "Great Heathen Army" that attacked the English kingdoms and sacked East Anglia was comprised of both Norse and Danes, but at other times Hibero-Norse kings fought the Danes over interference in their sphere of influence.

Although the term "Norse" can be generically applied to anybody who came from the north, it most properly applies to Norwegian vikings.
