Trump, the Omnibus, and the Art of the Real

No, Trump hasn’t betrayed his supporters.

Conservatives from sea to shining sea are screaming “betrayal” because the GOP passed and the President signed the massive omnibus spending bill. The poster child for this hysterical overreaction is Ann Coulter, who furiously tweeted that it would get Trump impeached and cause the Republicans to get wiped out in the upcoming midterms. Coulter hasn’t sounded this crazy since 2012, when she endorsed Mitt Romney for President. It is, of course, true that the bill is deeply flawed. To understand why it passed and why Trump signed it, conservatives should refer to this excerpt from The Art of the Deal:

My style of deal-making is quite simple and straightforward. I aim very high, and then keep pushing and pushing.… I never get too attached to one deal or one approach.

It’s no coincidence that White House budget director Mick Mulvaney sounded equally pragmatic when asked during a press conference if President Trump was willing to sign such an imperfect bill:

The answer is yes. Why? Because it funds his priorities.… Is it perfect? No. Is it exactly what we asked for in the budget? No. Were we ever going to get that? No.

This, like it or not, is how deals get made inside (and outside) the Beltway. No one gets everything they want. [SNIP]

As to this particular omnibus bill, it isn’t nearly as bad as people like Coulter suggest.[SNIP]

Politics is the art of the possible. Merely having a majority in congress doesn’t guarantee getting all of your agenda through, any more than having a speedometer that goes to 160 means that the care can go that fast. The Democrats found this out about a decade ago.

As to this particular omnibus bill, it isn’t nearly as bad as people like Coulter suggest. Conspicuously absent from the final bill

So it could have been even worse. Pretty weak defense.

killing Obamacare repeal

Simply false - no Obamacare repeal bill was ever debated much less voted on.

You did notice the vote totals? A veto would of been overridden.

People sitting in the stands have the luxury of playing Monday Morning quarterback. People on the field do not.

Well, the Cloud Act was passed so you can kiss your 4th Amendment Rights good-bye.

What a bloody claptrap to defend the indefensible.
There was no deal with this abomination bill, much “less art of the deal”.

Especially true when Republicans are in control. They are all talk and no action.

They want our votes and our money but not our beliefs and convictions.

Show me where I said otherwise.

If the article had stopped at your point, no debate - instead, it went further to make weak and false arguments, as I pointed out.

Then you can’t criticize GWB for his big government. Bush didn’t have a filibuster proof senate.

Could have been worse is a very weak defense. This bill as written was a total sellout. Yes the military get desperately needed help but it was wrapped with Rat demands. It is exactly what you’d get from a Dem congress. Make Trump eat bunch of BS to get the military help. The ban on
any new wall is just too much mention stripping out funding for border enforcement personnel.

“A veto would of been overridden.”

NO. And even if it were, this abomination bill would then be owned by the swamp instead of by Trump, which, politically would be a totally different thing.

A team should try to score points. Winning requires a combination of a good offense and defense. The GOP has neither.

GOP leadership had a long time to get this bill through the process but they ginned this thing up behind closed doors and then waited until just before the long congressional recess to spring it on members of congress who had no time to read it.

This isn’t how you play the game. They threw the game to the other side — whose fans are now cheering wildy in the stands.

+1. Good comment. This bill was of, by and for the Swamp, and they would have owned it.

I realize we desperately needed to increase defense spending. But Ryan and company gave the Dems pretty much everything they wanted. No excuse for that.

Swell. “new powers granted to the attorney general, who can enter into agreements with foreign countries unilaterally. Those agreements could potentially circumvent the protections of US courts. The act also wouldn’t require users or local governments to be notified when a data request is made, making meaningful oversight significantly harder.” - https://www.theverge.com/2018/3/22/17131004/cloud-act-congress-omnibus-passed-mlat

So in other words the President is supposed to sign off on any piece of crap budget bill, no matter how high the resulting deficit, no matter how much pork is in it, just because it has defense money in it?
