Terrorists and rogue states are always most successful when they do the unexpected and the unthinkable.
That’s a clever conspiracy theory which is based on more than many such ideas.
But you have to ask yourself what do the various parties have to gain. And how big are the risks they are willing to take?
China is the sleeping giant. The US is the biggest source of their growing revenues. They would be forced to take our side against North Korea.
Yes, it is quite possible, not only in my view, but in the view of Vipin Narang of MIT...
Why? Because Kim needs to establish his bargaining position before the talks, and the only way to do that is to prove what he has. Accordingly, he may choose to drop a couple of nukes say, in the Texas panhandle, causing minimal causalties, but thereby demonstrating he has the range to hit DC, NY, and LA, and has survivable re-entry vehicles. (He would not target DC as that would be seen as a decapitation strike and would immediately prompt a full retaliatory strike.)
And we would not respond for to do so would risk millions of deaths of South Koreans, Japanese, and Americans in a certain number of our own cities.
That would flip the negotiating leverage - instead of Trump demanding de-nuclearization, Kim will demand American de-militarization of the South China Sea and the Sea of Japan. And we will comply...and the Chinese are behind it all.
Such a symbolic strike by Kim would also collapse our stock market, tank the dollar, and send interest rates out of sight. We would become poor overnight, which is his way of repaying us for crippling sanctions which have devastated what little economy he had.
He almost has to do it to survive...
