science throughout history has been exactly that, with many famous examples including Kepler, Galileo, Harvey, Lister, Louis Pasteur, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, Alfred Wegener, Antoine Lavoisier, and Robin Warren and Barry J. and many, many others.
