The mothers who regret having children
BBC ^ | 04-03-2018 | Jean Mackenzie

"If I could turn the clock back I would not have had children," says Rachel who is now in her 50s.

She has three children - her youngest is 17 - and for most of this time she has been a single mother, which is when the reality hit her.

"There were times where I didn't feel mature enough to be responsible for somebody, this little person that needed me for their existence," she says.

"It just felt like an endless round of putting a bottle or food in their mouth for it to come out of the other end - and at what point was any of this going to be fun?

"I just felt like screaming that actually it's not all it's cracked up to be. If you're really maternal then that's great you've got everything you've wanted, but when you're not maternal all you've done is trap yourself."

Well, if she had kids with the idea that they would be *fun*, then she did it for the wrong reasons.

And if she doesn’t like the way they turned out, she has non one to blame but herself. SHE raised them. They are a product of their upbringing.

She is now reaping what she sowed, and unfortunately, she ended up destroying three lives in the process.

Well said.

My offspring bring me joy everyday, including “adopted” ones from along life’s way. That said I am sure that if I only focused on the rough spots I would have a different outlook.

I regret that Ann Dunham, Rose Fitzgerald, and Dorothy Howell had children.

She should have either kept her knees together or given them up for adoption.

Three teenagers in my house now-in a few months there will be four.

It’s challenging, but I enjoy having kids old enough to converse with on many topics. It helps having little kids in the house as well-an “I love you” and hug from a preschooler can soften the hardest teenage heart.

A line from the song, "I Hate Men" from the musical "Kiss Me Kate":

But don't forget 'tis he who'll have the fun and thee the baby,

Some people are just not suitable or equipped to be part of the human race. Dogs and cats and other animals, do look after their offspring, without worrying about their own lifestyle. Those “dumb” creatures have more “humanity” than the woman above. She at least had the decency to not murder her children, like others have been known to do because they were “burdens” to her life.

Geez, then keep your legs together or take the initiative to ensure that you can't/won't get pregnant. How easy is that?

To perpetuate living in sin?

Even with contraception, that’s meant for those who are married, not fornicators.

The only way to raise children properly is with the biological mother and father raising them together in a Christian household. With that division of labor parenting is tough but there are so many more joyful times than bad times.

I have been blessed with two children and my only regret is that we did not have at least three children, maybe four.

The thing with children is it puts a magnifying glass on yourself and your own life.

I have two children, they are both different, but I can see parts of myself in both of them.

I think parenting can bring out self-awareness like nothing else.

I'll bet her children wish the same thing from time to time. Can there be anything worse than feeling that one's mother doesn't love you?

Well, she did say "most of that time she was a single mother," but she didn't say she had kids out of wedlock.

Could have. but that's not what she said.

She could have married, 6 years later had 3 kids and husband died or they divorced. The rest of her life, she's single, and a mother.

I'm not insisting on that scenario, but it could be.

Be nice to your kids (if you have them) — they will eventually choose your nursing home.

There is truth to this statement and as parents get older, they will need assistance.
