CHICAGO — University of Chicago police have released body cam video and video from a police vehicle of a shooting that injured a student who charged at an officer with a metal pipe.
The University of Chicago student has been identified as 21-year-old Charles Thomas. Thomas is facing criminal charges in connection with the shooting, including felony aggravated assault of a peace officer and two counts of felony criminal damage to property, according to Chicago police.
He is also facing two misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property.
The incident happened about 10:12 p.m. Tuesday in the 5300 block of South Kimbark Avenue in Hyde Park. University police were responding to a robbery call when they encountered Thomas carrying a long metal pipe, the university's president and provost said in a joint statement.

Do not bring a pipe to a gun fight.
The kid most likely has some kind of bipolar disorder or Schizophrenia.
That, unlike many quick marginal incidents, is a good shoot, as the saying goes.
This young man belongs in an asylum, or at least needs to be thoroughly detoxed and examined.
Back to the shooting range, until a 3-inch center-of-mass grouping can be achieved.

Not just “some”...He probably has all of them.
These cameras are paying off. In the past, this could have been some kid walking through the ally going to a bible study. Now, we know it was a welder wielding weally wong weapon.
He'll likely be put on meds, then released, and eventually he'll likely stop taking the meds.... and we're back to his carrying a pipe, bashing in car windows... and maybe the head of someone who doesn't have a gun.
I was impressed that the officer was backing away from the perp for forty seconds. Sounds like the cop did everything to avoid pressing the situation.

Never point ANYTHING at a cop or security officer when stopped in traffic, or asked to stop for questioning anywhere. If you are black and have anger issues, or any color and otherwise mentally impaired, have it tattooed on your arm.
It's not rocket science.
We don't need law enforcement procedures and training reform.
We need anti-social, indolent, drug-addled criminal thug reform!
This cop deserves a medal for his outstanding performance. He quickly assessed that he was dealing with a “mental” and went above and beyond to avoid a self defense shooting until it could no longer be avoided. And, once shooting became necessary, he fired only a single shot.
The young man’s family should thank this cop for the patience he displayed.

Yup. The cop clearly told the kid to put down the pipe. This really shows how the cops body cam can provide a clear record of what happened.
