Reminds me of a conversation I once had with a senior sports executive. He told me they average 1-2 spectator fatalities every year at a certain well-known sports event. That sounded outrageous to me until he pointed out that there are 160,000+ people in attendance, and on any given day in a population that large there is a statistical likelihood that a few of them would die of natural causes.
Recall reading about them dropping dead when the heat got into the 80's for a few days.
And the Spanish have a phrase for them:
The tall sunburned people with bad teeth.
From the headline, I thought this article would be dated at least 100 years ago.
That’s my understanding, and the elderly and presumably vulnerable frequently die from hypothermia.
I would bet due the British attitude towards global warming there are costly restrictions to common sense usage of heating appliances.
Probably hiding all the deaths due to waiting for socialist healthcare.

However, they do use fireplace with coal, gas, or electric heat.
When I lived in Wroughton, UK the flat had one electric heater that required shillings in a meter to heat the rooms.
Unless you stayed in the sitting room the temp in winter time was a cool 55 degrees.

My guess is that in the UK *maybe* two or there deaths per day during the winter months were directly attributable to hypothermia.

The UK is a first-world nation, yet 48k Brits die from the cold? Doubt there were that many civilians who died annually during medieval times or even during WW2 when Germany was bombing them into the underground. This report does not pass the “smell test”. I call bu!!sh!t on this one.

I see your point. We’ve watched lots of Brit TV. They have fire places, often more than one. Where Americans had pot bellied stoves, then the more modern wood burners and of course modern HVAC systems.
Point being, we tried a fire place once in a new home. Practically no heat unless we choked the chimney, then we had smoke in the house. We now have a modern wood burner, and the same amount of wood we wasted in a fireplace will literally roast us out.
Funny the Brits haven’t caught on.

So-called modern siding did a super job of warming up a Brit government apartment house some months back, as I seem to recall.
