Cyclist recovering from crash with drunk driver injured again in hit-and-run

When JoJo McKibben was the victim of a hit-and-run on April 3 as she biked to work, she wasn't all that surprised. She was hit while biking by a drunk driver last summer and has come to expect that cars won't realize she's riding on two wheels. McKibben's boyfriend Brendan Sharpe said he has also been seriously injured by cars while he's biked in Austin, once in 2009 and again in 2015... Katie Delleoz, the executive director of Bike Austin, said she personally has nearly been struck at the same intersection McKibben was hit at last week

Bicycle dick attitude I run into (not literally....yet) all the time.

Me too, and I’m a cyclist!

I like to watch youtube crash videos. The ones with cyclists are pretty annoying. Self-righteous bike riders literally begging to get hit. You kinda want to just “nudge” them off the road, to teach them a lesson in humility.

Disclaimer: I don’t want to hit anyone with my vehicles.

I’ve only had one close call with a cyclist. It was early in the morning on an unlit street. I encountered cyclist - dressed all in black - riding against traffic. I think that I missed him by less than two feet.

Had I not swerved I would have had a new hood ornament.

Not everybody pays much of a price when they hit a cyclist:

I consider a texting driver to be more dangerous than a person with a blood alcohol level of .15.

I was on I-65 northbound on my way to louisville this morning doing 82 mph in my FRS and this chick in an econobox passed me in the passing lane, eyes glued to the cell phone at steering wheel height, looking up at the road, and down at the phone, while following a car at about 4 car lengths distance. I wished I was driving my winter beater (the FRS never sees snow or salt) so I could casually pull in front of her and watch the mirror. At the moment I see her look down at her phone, hit the brakes just a bit and watch her plow into me, getting a nice settlement for my troubles, and getting top dollar for my beater.

I’d never do it (I don’t believe in any kind of brake checking), but a man can dream!

I forgot to say that not only do I think Texting makes you more dangerous than someone that blows a .15, but I think they should be legally treated accordingly.

Of course, it will be the driver who will be charged if/when something bad happens.

Get a dashcam.

you missed the point of my post. Go ahead and share your bike with cars and trucks. You have that right, but you may end up “dead right”. You cant fix stupid and when stupid driver meets righteous bicyclist.. guess who goes home in one piece.

You realize, of course, that you are TROLLING this thread with lame, irrelevant, and useless information.

If you have something constructive to say - in support of bikes on our roadways - then say it.

How about - Cyclists pay gasoline taxes that support.... No wait. Can’t say that.

Maybe - We cyclists have a right to ride 3 across in a lane, because EFF YOU. Well, no. Not good either.

Gee, I’m running out or reasons why cyclists should be jerks here. Maybe you can help me out?

kaythanx.

I have been riding bikes forever it seems, less lately, but never rode on streets amongst cars. And as a car driver, I feel lucky to have never hit a bike as too many ride like the own the road, without regard to the bigger, heavier, and more deadly car.

For someone to have been hit multiple times says they are not riding safely or in a safe area. Granted, one was a drunk, but still...

One of the most skilled motorcycle racers ever. Gets killed blowing a stop sign on a bicycle.

Two years ago, I missed a bicyclist in Portland, OR by 5ft.
She blew right thru a red light and didn’t even look.
It all started in San Francisco back 20 years ago as some sort of wild eyed protest against cars.

Cyclists currently pay gasoline taxes when they fuel their cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Why do you seek government to tax citizens MORE?

Point us to a FreeRepublic thread where responsible cyclists advocate riding three abreast on public roads. We’ll wait. Kaythanx.

***bicyclists routinely run red lights and stop signs, ***

Years ago in Tulsa, I was at a light on a major street during rush hour. When it turned green I proceeded forward but hit my brakes when two bicyclists zipped from the left right across the intersection. They did not even slow down.

Glad I had good brakes.

Sorry to learn of your unfortunate traffic experience in Portland, Oregon.
It is a town with GREAT coffee. Glad neither you or anyone was injured.
Agree with you roadways work best when drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians work together.
