“We’re engaged!” The phrase can cause excitement … or fear.

Once the joy wears off after hearing your pals are getting hitched, you realize your bank balance is about to take a massive hit.

Georgina Childs, 30, has had enough of forking out as a result of being a wedding guest…

The PR account manager from Essex, England, got herself into £2,000 (almost $2,900) of debt and had to move back in with her with her parents after attending 20 weddings and 12 hen dos (bachelorette parties) in four years.

I will buy gifts, but will not attend weddings. Funerals, yes. At funerals all the peacocks are in full shut down mode, just like I need them to be.

I’d be happy to give her what I can.

Tell me about it, we’re going to a wedding in a few months, easily going to set us back about $2000.

It’s the biggest racket going.

From a caption in the article:

The last hen do Georgina attended was this year in Granada
I think I see the problem.

When you realize that 3 grand is really not a lot of money at all..or a LOT if you are inches from poverty.

My niece decided to have her wedding in Saint Lucia a few years ago.
ahhh thousands of dollars to get there?
NOPE!

after a 15 year relationship the marriage lasted 6 months.
Something about 100 pot plants growing in the basement.....

Anyways my bank account now has about 4 thousand more in it than it would have.

When I worked at Lowe’s the manager commented that you could build a complete house with what was present in that store.

Ultimately, a wedding exists to serve only one person, and that is the bride’s mother.

It disgusts me. It’s all about signaling to others and conspicuous spending, all to serve an old lady’s imploding ego, so that she may live vicariously through her daughter for this one day.

Freepers excluded, of course.

Marry a rich man then divorce him so you can attend more weddings and hen do’s.

On the other hand... I have given generous weddings presents and never received even a Thank You. Written or verbal.

You can say that again, and again and again. It's so thoughtless and callous.

always thought it was an Eastern polytheistic relegion.

The "do" is pronounced "doo", as in "a big to-do" or a "to-do list."

Has she never heard of sending your regrets and a gift card?

At least she did not get herself too far in the hole. About six months of hard work and she should be back out on her own again. Hopefully a little wiser.

In many cases I agree. The Mother of the bride is finally having the wedding she wanted but never had.
