I come from a family of subtle racists. I figured that out in my mid to late teens. By the time I first registered to vote in 1968, I knew enough to go against my 100% Democrat family, and registered Republican.
My first presidential vote was for Nixon.
I began to turn conservative during the antiwar riots in Washington, D. C. in the early 70s. On my way to work the morning of one of the demonstrations, protestors had blocked the street I needed to turn onto to get to work. It infuriated me.
That was the moment.
