Since he was born in 1933, I doubt it. Wayne’s acting career had started by then, but he wasn’t the sort of household name you name your kids after. Even by John Wayne Gacy’s birth (1942), I still doubt anyone would immediately identify “John Wayne” with masculinity. (”Stagecoach” was Wayne’s main starring role in a hit movie at the time.)

Very interesting. Although I never followed the career of John Wayne much, it sounds like you are probably right. And what's more, I looked up John Wayne Gacy to see if there was a clue where his middle name came from and it turns out his full name was John Wayne Gacy, Jr.

So much for that theory.
