The dinner’s her show. She’s entitled to shine in it.

From your link....

All eyes were on First Lady Melania Trump on Tuesday night as she stole the show in a glittering Chanel gown for their first White House state dinner.

Mrs Trump wore a Chanel black Chantilly lace haute couture gown that had been hand-painted with silver and embroidered with crystal and sequins, which she paired with a pair of gunmetal stilettos......

.....This is the first state dinner for this administration and Melania has been at the center of its planning. The event is to honor French President Emmanuel Macron and French First Lady Brigitte Macron and as a sartorial gesture, Melanie chose for the occasion Chanel Haute Couture.

You can’t get any more high fashion than haute couture which, in France, is highly regulated by law. The French take fashion seriously! Of course, haute couture means that a piece it is a one-off and custom-made to precise specifications as this gown was for Melania. A similar look floated down the runway in the house’s spring couture show but it was transformed into a more conservative look for the First Lady.

She’s a gorgeous woman. But my ar-teeest’s eye does not like the faux hem line. It seems to cut her off.

It’s so good to have people who love America back in the White House. The stench is gone.

I agree. The sheer bottom doesn't work. It echoes the sheer panel at the top, but as you say, it cuts her off.

Exponentially classier than anything Mooch ever wore at these kinds of events. Class has returned to the White House, thank God.

I agree, it’s an unnecessary distraction, although I think I’ve seen her wear a similar border on another gown.
She still looks good of course, and the back of the dress was very pretty.

Her makeup is much more classy and updated than her former overdone style.

The Not What To Wear hosts Clinton and Stacy would approve.

She looked stunning and its the perfect evening dress.

If I was married, I would have my wife wear to a soiree.

Another take, on FLOTUS’ beautifully designed and worn couture gown....

...For the evening’s state dinner, the first for the Trump White House, she wore a Chanel haute couture gown with black Chantilly lace. It was hand-painted with silver and embroidered with crystals and sequins. Glittering straps followed the dress as it dipped to a low, open back. The gown was a dramatic and unabashed celebration of French fashion as a contemporary, global and cultural phenomenon, as well as a craft rooted in history and tradition. Chanel is one of a handful of companies with a vigorous haute couture business, which emphasizes handmade, highly personalized garments that can be priced beyond $100,000. (Taxpayers do not pay for the first lady’s wardrobe.)
