PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- Newly released video from a police body camera in Virginia shows a white officer shooting a black suspect in the back as he tries to run away. The Virginian-Pilot obtained video showing rookie Portsmouth Officer Jeremy Durocher wounding Deontrace Ward, who authorities described as an armed burglary suspect.
Authorities say the shooting occurred in October as police responded to a robbery call in a residential neighborhood in the southeast Virginia city.
Ward's mother, Eboni West, said the video shows the shooting was unjustified.
"It was heartbreaking to see my son shot while running away," West told the paper. "He didn't deserve to get shot."
Durocher's attorney, Nicolas Renninger, said Ward was a clear danger because he was armed. Police said they found a loaded handgun in Ward's pant leg. In the video, Durocher can be heard yelling, "He has a gun!"

Police body cam video shows officer shooting suspect in back
Oh geez, not this again.
Again, with these names.
Deontrace Ward
Eboni West
Is it too much to ask that just ONCE mother and son share a familial name, or even a first name that doesn’t sound like an LSD-induced game of Boggle?
Just once could they name a kid Frank?
Police shooting a fleeing armed felon is usually legally justified under most deadly force laws. If you don’t like it get the laws changed.
See BS. Checks out.
Ward is scheduled to stand trial May 1 on several felony charges including armed statutory burglary, assault of a police officer and possession of a firearm by a felon, the Virginian-Pilot reports. Court documents allege he stole jewelry from the home just before he was shot, the paper reports.
But if I’m just running away, I shouldn’t get shot,” he said.
A moment after Ward collapsed, the video shows, a group of five or six other police officers came around from the opposite side of the neighboring house. Among them was Officer Angelina Baaklini, who was shot and injured eight days later by a 15-year-old runaway she was trying to take home.

Sorry young perp...stop pulling armed robberies. This was a righteous shooting IMHO. No jury would convict the officer and he should not be made a sacrificial lamb by his department.
I'm sure cops have ROE for unarmed people running from them, this for example the fellow appears to have been caught red handed and decided to run. My ROE would be shoot him if I could take a safe shot. He was more than a robbery suspect. He was armed robber caught red handed. Don't care if he didn't pull his gun.
He didn't deserve what he was stealing either. If he was raised with just a little respect for other people and their property he might still be alive. Some of the blame might be on you momma.
Yeah, if the suspect is a danger to others, even if he is not an imminent danger to the officer- deadly force can be used.
Just think about it; if the suspect ran from the officer and carjacked somebody, people would want to know why the officer didn't stop him.
If he has a gun he could whirl and shoot while the officer’s jumping the fence or whatever. Run with a gun while committing crimes and you might get shot.
Even if they did, they’d just spell it Fran-que’.
This most likely will be justified.
The officer said he saw a gun and a gun was found. The suspect was not following commands and had plenty of time to put the gun in his pocket, which the shooting officer probably did not see. There were other officers around the house who definitely could have been in danger.
When you’re a convicted felon, do not go burglarizing houses with a firearm and resisting arrest.
List of how not to be shot by police;
1: Dont do things that are against local/regional/federal law.
2: If confused, refer to rule number one.
I never actually saw the show (was it on Netflix?) but I’ve seen a clip from “Justified” (from Elmore Leonard) in which Sheriff Raylan Givens confronts a suspect and ends up shooting him (this seems to happen multiple times in every episode).
A woman is standing by and shouts; “You shot him in the back!”
Raylan Givens: “Well, maybe he should have been running towards me.”
How bout just learning what the word STOP means.
They are traditional African names.
Shooting any man in the back—except under the most compelling circumstances—is the act of an abject coward, regardless of any Tyrannical law which might seek to justify it...
He runs away and shoots an unarmed civilian on the next corner in a carjacking attempt and the officers would be blamed
