Free two-day shipping may be enticing, but it doesn’t necessarily justify the higher price tag for an Amazon Prime membership.
Amazon AMZN, +3.60% raised the annual fee for its Prime membership program for the first time since 2014 — but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s less of a bargain for most consumers.
The online retailer announced that it will hike the annual fee for a Prime membership in the U.S. by 20% to $119. The change comes as Amazon revealed that it now has more than 100 million people globally who are members of the program. In January, Amazon raised the price of monthly memberships from $10.99 to $12.99 per month. The price change will go into effect starting May 11 for new members and starting June 16 for existing members when they renew.
Amazon said that it was upping the price of a Prime membership to offset the costs the program incurs, thanks to free shipping and digital content streaming. “Since we increased the U.S. annual price of Prime four years ago both the value of Prime and the cost to offer it have increased significantly,” an Amazon spokeswoman said in an email. “We still believe that Prime is disproportionately more valuable than the fee.”
But consumers who are considering Prime—and those who are already members—will need to closely evaluate whether the membership is still worth it at the higher price. Ultimately, that decision will come down to how much benefit each individual consumer derives from the program, whose perks range from free two-day shipping on Amazon purchases to free online photo storage and free audiobooks from Audible.

I just purchased some weed eater spools. They were advertised as original Black and Decker and I had purchased them before. On reordering, I got some Chinese knockoffs. When I wrote a review that stated Amazon needs to address all the third-party fraud on their site, they refused to publish it. The reviews are also total fraud. It used to be a decent place to research, but now it’s about as reliable as than the Washing Post. Amazon Prime is a good deal if you use it, but the site and its owner are not ethical. Screw Bezos.
When you live in the boonies, it IS worth it. Free shipping on bird seed and dog and cat food (canned and dry). . .plus it is delivered to my garage. I do check the prices and what I buy is within reason. A good deal for a senior. I use Prime a lot for gifts. . .shipping alone would have been well over $119. I didn’t realize they raised the price.
You can have packages shipped anywhere. I’ve shipped gifts or to myself at another address if I’m out of town. They don’t care where you ship.
I use Amazon Prime because I don’t have to drive to town (it’s a ways) and search for the item or go to a dozen stores. There is a wider selection, and I can read the reviews. It’s one vendor and I know I won’t have any problems with returns. I generally get packages one to two days, and on the rare occasion when it’s longer, the let me know when I ordered. Never had a problem. I’ve even had packages shipped to Hawaii free, which saves a ton of money.

I love Amazon myself———I have to pay for shipping(son offered to do it,I said no) but I have their Visa and usually have enough points accrued to cover shipping.
I also have the Fire stick,courtesy of my son.

The selection on internet (including Jet) is similar to Amazon. One time I ordered something and it was here the next day.
Barely worth $99 - I don’t watch the videos or listen to the music, so it was marginal for me anyway.
I got my money’s worth the first couple of years by buying large items that would have cost a fortune to ship without prime, but this past year I have probably lost money. And I notice that the 2 day shipping isn’t really “free” - you pay more for the same item on prime than what it costs without prime - usually a little better deal than standard shipping rate but not always.
As long as I am just buying random used books and the occasional bottle of vitamins on Amazon, prime isn’t worth it. Will likely cancel it when it comes due again.

No, not if you want to save money, and if free shipping for Ad ons stays at 25.00 and 35.00 for the standard free shipping, and if the abundance of such remains, and you are just an occasional (less than 2 orders per month) shopper. Thank God. Even if you paid a 6.00 shipping charge (which is Walmart’s standard cost) you would need to make 20 orders per year to save money with via Prime, though sometimes there are special sales for that class.
Not many good free (prime) Christian movies either.
