How QuinceaƱeras Work

For Hispanic girls in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the United States and elsewhere, the 15th birthday marks the most lavish celebration of their lives. Designating a girl’s transition from childhood to adulthood, the quinceañera is a two-part festivity that traces back to both indigenous and European cultural traditions and has become an increasingly opulent affair in recent years. Parents may even spend more on their daughters' "Sweet 15" quinceañeras than their weddings, in fact, which is why some refer them as mini bodas, or miniature weddings. Not counting the birthday presents a young girl might receive, a low-end quinceañera in the United States can easily cost about $3,000 [source: Colloff].

One look at a quince girl (a nickname for the quinceañera honoree) on her special day, and the high price tag makes sense. First off, there's the outfit: Often made of satin with lace overlays and rhinestone accents, quinceañera dresses, the visible centerpieces of these celebrations, mirror what Cinderella might’ve worn to her fairytale ball. The floor-length gowns are traditionally white or pale pink, but the revived quinceañera culture accepts dresses in a rainbow of hues. Perched on the quince girl’s head is a delicate tiara or crown, the symbolism of which we’ll discuss later in the article, and in her hands -- at least at the beginning of the ceremony -- she might hold a Bible or book of prayer.

Although its emphasis is more on the party than the prayer, the quinceañera starts at the local Catholic church. Before any birthday cake is cut, the quince girl attends a special Mass in which she reaffirms her dedication to God and receives a blessing from the priest....

They get pregnant that night, or the day after.

The age at which the girls become fair game for their uncles and their uncle’s friends.

So it’s like prom or a sweet 16 party? Back in the old days we could drink at our proms, keggers and other parties legally, as 18 was the age you cold buy liquor.

Yeah, that never happens in white families, thank God!

Some of them are even Protestant.

For those (I am not one) who think that Catholics aren’t Christians.

Although lately the Pope is leaving me a bit bewildered.

Not so much here. They use the same venues as wedding receptions, birthday parties, etc.: apartment complex clubrooms, the VFW hall or county park facilities on the low end, hotels and country clubs at the high end.

Try to web search something like "how to do X" and you will likely get these type of results -- wikihow, how stuff works, etc. Little content and details - they are designed to generate clicks and sell ad space.

I have better luck searching on youtube for "how to" or topic-specific forums such as auto repairs, electrical, gardening, etc.

For me, the "how to" sites are incredibly frustrating when looking for assistance on the web. Sometimes I put a "- sitename.com" in my search string to avoid these domains.

My wife is from Mexico.

She showed her maturity early by telling her parents to not squander their VERY hard-earned money on a meaningless and fleeting event.

Lavish quincineras beyond the means of the parents are just as stupid as lavish weddings beyond the means of their participants.

Taught many years beginning in 82 in Woodside and Astoria Queens. Many of the Latin girls from all the countries , Peru to Puerto Rico ( yeah, not a country) celebrated. It did have great meaning to most, more so than to the girls who celebrated Sweet 16s. However some got so out of hand in terms of money that a few parishes stopped their participation. No different than the extravagance of many Great Neck Bat Mitvahs.

Most of these "girls" probably have already squeezed out a couple of pups by the time they turn 15.

I'm reading an interesting book, Scarlett's Sisters: Young Women in the Old South, by Anya Jabour, a professor at the University of Montana. I got it off the library clearance shelf on Friday. I haven't got to the part about debuts and balls yet.

We heard all about this when DD’s little friend had her quince’ parties. Two because the parents were divorced. At one point DD was going to be one of her friends’ attendants but then the parents changed the venues. One party was in Chicago and the other in Indy, so she was not in the party after all.

DD’s other friends around that age were shocked that DD had bought a pair of high heels. “Does your father know? Should we not say anything?”

Before they have their party the girls are not supposed to wear either make up or heels.

Some parts of Hispanic culture, as far as strong family bonds, remind me of how we used to be.

Governor Dinwiddie is dim little $hit. I hope all his grandchildren marry Hispanics, destroying his precious white gene pool forever.
