Paul Newman was determined to help veterans in need, says close friend

Paul Newman may be celebrated as one of most iconic movie stars of the 20th century, but one of the achievements the actor was most proud of was helping others when cameras weren’t rolling.

Newman passed away in 2008 at age 83, but his legacy in giving back lives on.

In October 2017, Newman’s Own Foundation (NOF), the nonprofit founded by the screen legend, announced they were committing $6.7 million in grants to veterans organizations.

Bob Forrester, President and CEO of NOF, told Fox News it’s a decision his beloved friend would have applauded.

NOF launched 35 years ago, in 1982, when Newman decided to sell his homemade salad dressing and donate 100 percent of the profits to charity. Forrester revealed the organization recently reached a milestone of $500 million in donations, helping thousands of charities for people in need.

Both Forrester and Newman have close connections to the troops. Forrester was an army officer in Vietnam and Newman served in World War II.

“He didn’t talk about that much,” said Forrester. “People who’ve been in combat don’t talk about things like that so much. But it had a profound impact on him. He just knew he was lucky. He had a huge respect for the men and women of our military.

"He believed in the concept of luck. He would say he was lucky to be born in America with so many opportunities and he was lucky to work for the movies.”

It's extremely difficult for me to believe that *any* Hollywood star,of *any* era,was/is a truly respectable person...with the exception of Ronald Reagan and John Wayne.

However,I just did a quick search on Newman and found that he served honorably during WWII,so I just might have to add his name to the other two.

Paul Newman was a great actor. HUD is in my top 5 favorite-movie list. The entire cast was superb.

Newman was pretty liberal, however unlike most he actually did do a great deal to help many people.

He was a great actor, really good race car driver and car owner.

I have a lot of respect for him.

Back then, being liberal, wasn’t necessarily being anti-American.

Mark Levin read a list of famous actors who served in World War II and a brief description of their service. It took him a long time to read the list. All were very well known to anybody who watched movies or TV during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Paul Newman was one of many.

Have a story about Paul Newman. When we lived in Connecticut, my wife worked for a company that had the top floor in a eight story office building in Westport.

This was back about 1980 and Paul Newman, who was involved in auto racing at the time, had an office devoted to this pursuit on a lower floor. He and his wife Joan & family lived in Westport.

The parking garage for the building was on the bottom level.

My wife was leaving work one day taking the elevator (alone) down to the garage when the elevator stopped on the fourth floor.

Paul Newman steps in to the elevator (unaccompanied). Also going to the parking level.

This was probably the first time my wife, in her life, was rendered speechless. ;)

Newman was a democrat before they became the corrupt Marxist , anti-American traitors they are today .

Democrats back then had flawed ideas , but they were not all bad people.

Heh heh, that would be a shocker and goes to show he was a down to earth person.

Actors that famous now would more than likely have an armed security guy with them, of course times have changed now too.

That’s kind of what I suspected, but I posted this for everyone’s information. I don’t know anything about any of them. Seems like a great number of his recipient organizations are in CT, MA, and primarily northern states.
