yes, i agree that any airline can screw up badly at almost any time

Spirit had three months to let us know they’d cancelled our flight. and then after they stranded us with our bags at the airport, Spirit refused ANY help at all in finding an alternate airline. and we finally had to threaten to sue them to get our damned money back.
These were not just normal or accidental operational problems.

I am glad I stopped flying Commercial back in 2000.

Back in the early 90s, prior to the airlines becoming totally worthless, I entered the Albuquerque airport to go home after a meeting. I always used United Airlines as I had to fly to Albuquerque every three weeks or so and United had the fastest connections.

Anyway, I step into the airport and see that every United flight into Denver was listed in red as the Pope was visiting and everybody and their brother was trying to get into Denver. I walked over to the United desk and they kindly got me on an AA flight routed through DFW. It took a little longer than usual but I made it home instead of possibly being stuck in Denver for an extra day.

I think those days of customer service are over.
