The 'Murphy Brown' reboot to be the anti-'Roseanne,' full of liberal laughs
Yahoo News ^ | May 17, 2018 | Ken Tucker

I don’t know whether the Murphy Brown reboot planned for fall will be funny, but I do know it’s going to be political. At Tuesday’s CBS “upfront” — the annual unveiling of new fall shows for the networks to sell to advertisers — Candice Bergen was on hand to introduce a peek at the first new season of Murphy Brown since the show went off the air in 1998 after 10 seasons. Bergen, looking impish and energetic at age 72, said that “we wanted to stay really topical, so we didn’t shoot a pilot because if we did we’d already be several news cycles and Stormys out of date.”

I wonder if Bergen and the network really comprehend the potential resistance they’re going to face with this new Murphy Brown. The network they’re satirizing — Fox News — is going to be out there full-force, stirring up animosity among their viewers for this liberal sitcom. This will be especially true if the network and its audience believe that Roseanne has been muzzled for its conservative views.

It’s not as though Murphy Brown has never been political before this, of course. That son she’ll soon be competing against is the same born-out-of-wedlock child that inspired real-life criticism from Vice President Dan Quayle back in 1992. Bergen — whose movie career is still active with the comedy Book Club opening this weekend — isn’t shying away from the Fox News comparisons: “Cable news is populated with all kinds, like the Hannitys of the world and actual journalists too,” she said. The new Murphy Brown will have a combination of old and new cast members, including Faith Ford, Joe Regalbuto, and Grant Shaud from the original cast. CBS has ordered 13 episodes for a fall premiere.

Robert Pastorelli would be the only reason I'd check it out, but he died in 2004.

Pastorelli was found dead at his home in Hollywood Hills on March 8, 2004, from a narcotics overdose.[9] At the time of his death, Pastorelli had been forewarned that authorities were planning on arresting him for further questioning. A review of the original evidence of the March 1999 shooting of his girlfriend Charemon Jonovich resulted in her cause of death being reclassified a homicide, and Pastorelli was identified as a prime suspect.[9]

The Coroner's Office reported Pastorelli died of a "fatal blood concentration of morphine".

“...full of liberal laughs”

Liberals do not laugh. They have no sense of humor. They can’t take a joke without finding offense in it and they are afraid to make a joke for fear they’ll be denounced by their own commentariat.

I loved the original Moonlighting, but it could never be one of the long running sitcoms. The romantic tension fed the dramatic tension. But at some point the characters had to decide if they wanted to pursue a relationship or pursue others. Once that was decided the tension and the interest waned. Inevitable.

Besides, once Bruce spent Christmas Eve in LA in the Nakatori Tower, he was headed in a different direction.

Let me see... they will insult prominent conservatives, and mock ordinary people. The meaner they are, the better, because being cruel and vulgar is what the left perceives as humor.

No, thanks.

Liberals don’t laugh they go “ooo” and “ahh” and scream and clap. They just applaud but they couldn’t recognize actual humor because true humor requires intelligence or understanding of irony. Liberals spend all of their time parsing for offensive statements so if they don’t find anything it’s not funny anymore.

I see there is a Magnum P.I. reboot, as well, with...........Juliet Higgins?

I guess there will be some cat fights with Magnum’s female clients (a staple). Unless the writers do away with those.

From your link...

>>>From Emmy Award winner Dick Wolf and the team behind the “Law & Order” franchise, FBI is a fast-paced drama about the inner workings of the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. <<<

I can’t wait for the riveting episode where they carry out an illegal political operation for the Democrats against a prominent but brash New York businessman. Must see TV for sure!

The ratings won’t even come close to Roseanne’s. This is one of the reboots that makes the least sense.

Magnum P.I. Is coming back on mondays in the fall. Golden girls only 1 left. Facts of life never because Nancy Mckeon said NEVER! Friends will never be remade.

More proof of how out of touch Hollywood is.
They think people want nostalgia and reboots.
They want conservative content and aren’t getting it. That was demonstrated, too, by Tim Allen’s show getting cancelled despite good ratings.
There IS an audience, as Roseanne shows, but they see the liberal sacred message as more important than making money serving the audience.

Hate to see Magnum come back. The original with Tom Selleck is sacred. :) I read that the new Magnum is female — Magnum’s daughter or something.

On Five-O, the new Kono is a girl. WTF anyhow?

“Never thought I’d be cheering for Roseanne.”

A couple days ago I heard (probably on Fox) that the next season of Roseanne will have a different slant, and that probably a lot of people who like it now aren’t going to be happy about it. I wonder what that means.

How sad, but stupid. May he RIP.
The only character on MB who might be able to relate to today’s audience.

So all the late nite shows, all the other sitcoms, all the cable serial shows, and the perennially craptacular SNL, just isn’t enough...

“Facts of Life, Magnum PI or Golden Girls were available for revivals?”

Maybe a remake of Gomer Pyle where they officially ask and he officially tells.
