FULL TITLE: The rise of homeschooling in West Virginia, Crouse: 'I've seen a shift in how people view home school'

CHARLESTON — As all eyes turned to public education during the historic statewide teacher strike, more parents are choosing to pull their students out of school and educate them at home.

Enrolling a child in private school has traditionally been the most popular alternative to public school. But in recent years, data shows there has been a surge in the number of home-schooled students.

“I’ve seen a shift in how people view homeschool, for sure,” said Kathie Hess Crouse. “Just personally, I have seen that with a lot of my friends because I’m so open about how we homeschool. In the 2015-16 school year, the number of children in homeschooling [in WVa] finally surpassed the number in private school. That year, there were about 11,000 homeschooled children compared to the nearly 10,405 in private schools, according to data from the state’s Department of Education.

The divide has only grown larger since then, the data shows. But because lawmakers changed the reporting requirements, data for the 2016-17 school year cannot be compared as easily to previous years.

Impressive.

We also homeschooled all four of our children and I have one son in medical school right now. Where is your daughter? My son is at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn New York. He graduates next year.
