Box Office: Marvel's 'Avengers: Infinity War' Tops $1.8 Billion Worldwide
Forbes ^ | 05/20/18 | Scott Mendelson

Posted on 05/20/2018 6:25:54 PM PDT by Simon Green

Walt Disney’s Avengers: Infinity War earned another $28.7 million (-53%) on its fourth weekend, bringing its 24-day domestic total to $595m. The MCU epic should cross the $600m domestic milestone sometime this week, perhaps as early as Wednesday. That would be its 27th day of release, still right between The Force Awakens (12 days) and Black Panther (31 days). Speaking of which, its fourth weekend was just barely above Black Panther’s $26m fifth weekend. So, yes, Avengers: Infinity War’s domestic total will eventually start trailing Black Panther’s. At this juncture, it’s still looking like Infinity War will end its domestic run with over/under $655m.

I expect Disney to go the extra mile to get it over Titanic’s $659m domestic cume to put it in fourth place on the all-time domestic charts. But it’s still doing blow-out business overseas, earning another $84.4m outside of North America, including $53.7m (-75%) in its second weekend in China. It has earned $302m there already, becoming the fourth-biggest Hollywood grosser in the world’s biggest moviegoing marketplace. It sits behind only Transformers: Age of Extinction ($320m in 2014) and the last two Fast and Furious movies ($391m in 2015 and $392m in 2017). Oh, and it’s the second movie, after Furious 7, to earn $300m in two different territories.

The MCU flick has earned $1.218 billion overseas, pushing it past Furious 7 ($1.163b) to become the third-biggest overseas earner of all time, behind Titanic ($1.5b) and Avatar ($2b). And with $1.814b worldwide, it is the fourth-biggest global grosser, behind (for now) Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.068b), Titanic ($2.1b) and Avatar ($2.78b). Yes, it’s still on track to top $2b worldwide by the end of its run, but the global cume of Titanic (counting the reissues) is still likely a bridge-too-far.

Just watched it this morning...what a ride! Highly recommended, with two caveats:

1) If you're not at least moderately familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe you will be hopelessly lost.

2) This film does not stand on its own. We'll all need to see Avengers 4 next year to find out how it ends.

Enjoyed it, except for the unnecessary quip about Jesus. Totally unnecessary.

Where was that? I’ve seen it twice, with plans to see it at least once more. Never saw or heard anything about Jesus in this one. I’m the original Avenger, Cap told Loki there’s only one God, and he doesn’t dress like that.

I suppose it's not much of a spoiler. Dr. Strange shouts at the Guardians of the Galaxy, “What master do you serve?” and Star Lord rolls his eyes and asks, “Am I supposed to say Jesus?”.

Well if the answer to who was your master would not be “Thanos”, what would it be?
Chris Pratt has stated he is a Christian.

Saw “Deadpool 2” today. Ugh. Nowhere close to as good as #1. Every other joke is a penis joke.

It’s like Michael Bay made “Suicide Squad” with the writers of “Ishtar.”

And, of course, the reference to the lesbo lovers.

Interesting that in “Deadpool 2” Josh Brolin begins the movie as the villain in that as well (Cable, who eventually comes around).

When was the last time the same guy was a different villain in two SIMULTANEOUS superhero movies?

Saw it today - nodded off a couple times. Yes it sucked that bad. It has nothing to do with the original Infinity War as published back in the day.

As much as I have liked the various Avenger-based movies, this “franchise” needs to come to an abrupt and permanent end.

the Marvel Universe has reached a point of complete foolishness.

What I would give for old-style drama movie these days.

Remember whenthe pundits and Disney cheerleaders were telling us how big the Black Panther box-office was?

It made $697 million at the domestic box office, and $1.3 billion worldwide. That's not big?

3 months later it is already on home video.

Everything comes out on home video quickly these days.

Kind of...he was Ego, the Living Planet. As Bill Murray put it in "Groundhog Day":

" I'm a god — I'm not the God".

I suppose that they could have been planning movies for the next ten years instead of the next four.

It’s going to be a long four years.

:(

The absolute core films that provide fast backstory and characters, prior to A:IW, are Cpt America Civil War, Thor Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy 1.

Ah, yes. Why do you perceive that as a slight? With the firm-and-brimstone corner preachers, the height of the TV pastors, was when Peter was planet-napped away from Earth, so, sure, it makes sense to me. And it was funny.

Plus - who knows, it might make get someone to go and investigate Jesus.
