SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - South Mississippi's casinos are already breaking revenue records before the peak summer season even begins.

The Mississippi Department of Revenue released figures of last month's gaming gross revenue, boasting a total of $108.5 million dollars to Coast casinos in April. This marks a record-breaking 9 percent increase from April 2017, when Coast Casinos brought in $99 million.

The second highest April earnings took place in 2007, when there was a large resurgence in business and revenue following Hurricane Katrina. That year, Coast casinos reported a revenue of $107 million.

I just saw on drudge that the Atlantic City casinos are down 12%. They must be doing something right down here.

You know they are doing well because that airport in Gulfport never seems to stop expanding and remodeling. Always limos lined up there.

AC is getting destroyed by casinos in neighboring states. No reason to go to AC except for gambling. I imagine the MS Coast is the only place to go until one hits the Mississippi.

Problem #1 Atlantic City has the unfortunate distinction to be within the jurisdiction of the People’s Republic of New Jersey. That alone will kill off most businesses and productive citizens.

Problem #2 AC tolerated for too long crime, loitering, drug use and uncleanliness at and near the AC coastline. Walking along the Boardwalk at night is seen as taking your life in your own hands.

Problem #3 The new Governor has indicated he wants NJ to be another California, only with legalized pot and more illegals. Not exactly a recipe for prosperity.

Problem #4 Neighboring casinos. The need to make the trip to AC is an increasingly difficult sell.
