Conservatives Fail the N.F.L.’s Free Speech Test
NY Times ^ | May 24, 2018 | David French

Posted on 05/25/2018 6:25:41 AM PDT by C19fan

The United States is in the grips of a free-speech paradox. At the same time that the law provides more protection to personal expression than at any time in the nation’s history, large numbers of Americans feel less free to speak. The culprit isn’t government censorship but instead corporate, community and peer intimidation.

Conservatives can recite the names of the publicly shamed from memory. There was Brendan Eich, hounded out of Mozilla for donating to a California ballot initiative that defined marriage as the union of a man and woman. There was James Damore, abruptly terminated from Google after he wrote an essay attributing the company’s difficulty in attracting female software engineers more to biology and free choice than to systemic discrimination. On campus, the list is as long and grows longer every semester.

Free Speech is what you do on your own time.

When you are being a paid entertainer, you entertain- you don’t annoy a large portion of your audience by doing anything other then what they paid to see you do - in this case, football.

Liberals think free speech is their right, that everyone has to listen to them and accept it, but they have the right to use violence to shut down everyone else’s speech.

French is a dipweed. Employers have the right to determine what behavior is allowed while on the clock. If the NFL cracked down on players for protesting with BLM during the week, he might have a point. But he doesn’t here. He just gave his never-Trump underoos another twist.

So people being doxxed for supporting Trump, physically beaten and abused as well, but French is mad because the NFL—a private corporation—will bar people from disrespecting the anthem?

FU David French, you chinless f****t!

What free speech?! Football players are EMPLOYEES and football games are workplace, not free speech forums. The whole problem sits at the feet of the owners. They either control their employees or they pay the consequences. I say continue the boycott until they put a complete stop to disrespecting our national flag, our national anthem, and our nation.

The only thing French left out was a man-crush reference to the perfect crease in Obama’s “pant.”

This guy has it backwards. Speech has been heard all around.

National Felon League says “Death to America”

America says “Death to the NFL”

Conservatives/Christians are not allowed free speech so why do liberals think they have the right to disrespect the majority of America.

Correct. You can’t legally be jailed for (most) speech, but you can be fired.

They have every right to protest, the problem is the manner in which they chose to Do it. Would it be acceptable forms to protest their action by myself and friends deficating in stadium entrance while attendees were entering?

Yup exactly. They can do whatever they want on their social media or outside of work. People can’t do whatever they want at work.

Yep. The NFL "took a knee" during the National anthem; the (former) fans "took a knee" during the NFL season and stopped watching.

Last I looked the First Amendment was a restriction upon the government. Wasn’t aware that I was being governed by the NFL. Granted, free speech is our tradition but lets remember what the Constitution actually says.

That, and French completely misses the underlying reason why the protesters were kneeling - the whole black lives matter/police shootings nonsense. The entire protest was based upon a lie.

And finally, if French is of the opinion that conservatives will be appeased by this empty gesture, he’s sorely mistaken. From what I can see, the problems go much deeper than just kneeling.

Wrong premise, this isn’t about free speech, it’s about employer rights.
