Report: 110 Confederate monuments removed in U.S. since 2015

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — It took generations to erect all the nation's Confederate monuments, and a new report shows they're being removed at a pace of about three each month.

The study — released Monday by the Southern Poverty Law Center — shows that 110 Confederate monuments have been removed nationwide since 2015, when a shooting at a black church in South Carolina energized a movement against such memorials.

The number — which includes schools and roads that have been renamed in California, a repurposed Confederate holiday in Georgia, plus rebel flags and monuments that have been taken down in Alabama, Louisiana and elsewhere — represents a relative handful compared with the more than 1,700 memorials that remain to hail the Southern "lost cause."

But the change is notable considering that removing such memorials wasn't widely discussed until the killing of nine black people at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, said Heidi Beirich of the Southern Poverty Law Center, a liberal activist organization based in Montgomery that monitors extremism. White supremacist Dylann Roof has been sentenced to death for the 2015 attack.

After the Charleston shooting, photos surfaced of Roof posing with the Confederate battle flag, helping to change the national dialogue.

"I think it kind of signifies something monumental," said Beirich, director of the organization's Intelligence Project. "I think people are finally willing to confront the history and come to terms with it."

Many of the Confederate monuments that are now controversial were erected in the early 1900s by groups composed of women and veterans. Some honor generals or soldiers; others bear inscriptions that critics say wrongly gloss over slavery as a reason for the war or portray the Confederate cause as noble.

"I think it kind of signifies something monumental,"

Is that supposed to be some kind of pun?

I am going to predict a trend, especially throughout the south. More families will name their kids after confederate leaders, Stonewall, Nathan, Lee, and so on, to keep the traditions alive. You can tear down statues but let’ see libs forbid the naming of kids.

Awhile back I was reading about a famous American, so famous that there are many public statues of him. And there are streets named after him. But he thought that homosexuality was a mental disorder. And he said that homosexuals should go see a psychiatrist.

I wonder if the gays will demand that his statues come down.

Oh, I almost forgot. That famous American was Martin Luther King.

I wish there was a “place” these could be sent to so they could be (1) preserved and (2) enjoyed by real people.

Think it will stop with Southern history? Guess again. The cultural marxists and Left Wing hate groups like the SPLC headed by pervert Morris Deas will move on to other parts of history next. They’re already trying to demonize Thomas Jefferson.

Washington, Madison, Patrick Henry, George Mason, etc were slaveowners too. Ben Franklin made a lot of money selling ad space in his papers for slavetrading, escaped salves etc. John Adams was only too happy to try to press the Brits to return escaped slaves who sided with the crown. John Hancock? He was the largest slave trader in New England. Many many businesses that got their start in New England (not to mention Ivy League universities) got their seed money from slave trading. That’s what’s coming next. You have been warned.

A country without a history is not a country.

“We’ll have Southern uniforms there, not Union uniforms.”

Will they have the dress Jefferson Davis was wearing when he was captured?

110 out of 1,100+, and almost all of them in big, blue cities, not towns or rural areas. Whatever.

Really surprised the AP is still on this.

After the Charleston shooting, photos surfaced of Roof posing with the Confederate battle flag, helping to change the national dialogue.

The media has repeated this tired line so many times they consider it to be the gospel truth now. I swear I've read this exact thing, slightly reworded, fifty times in fifty different articles.

It'd be interesting to know how much of the removal activity was in June-August of 2015 and like August-September 2017. It seems those moments were when local Democratic politicians (city councils, mayors) in various blue cities started falling all over themselves to pander in the midst of a media-manufactured flavor of the month "outrage."

Some of these commies want to rename Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. To what it’s not clear.

Until the leftist freaks decry and remove all the landmarks, memorials, accolades and images of KKK Kleagle US Sen. Robert Byrd, D-WVa, they don’t have a case or a clue.

Someone should open up a private confederate museum and give them all a home. Charge liberals extra to come and see ‘em.

Sen. Robert Byrd just wasn’t in the Klan. He was an Exalted Cyclops. That’s the top officer in a Klan unit.

It is amazing that no Democrat seems to care about that. Then again, maybe it’s not so amazing.

Since they’ve removed the statues in Baltimore there have been no murders, no crime, the sun shines every day, poverty is a thing of the past and high school graduation rates are 100%.
