That’s actually pretty common outside of the US, even in places where homicides are a fraction of US levels. What is shocking to expats I’ve spoken to, is the sliding glass doors on single story American homes. It looks to them like a standing invitation for burglary or home invasion.

Australia’s crime rates are very low - lower than Britain’s, which is ironic, given that Australia was founded as a prison colony. An Australian comments on his shock at how an intruder can enter the average American home just by breaking a glass panel:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskAnAmerican/comments/7tx1v5/why_dont_most_american_homes_have_security_doors/
{Here in old Oz the vast majority of houses have security screens on our doors and windows. These are doors that go in front of your doors/windows that are made out of metal bars and heavy wire meshing that lock usually with a built in deadlock. They make it hard for people outside to see in and offer a good inital barrier of protection between yourself and outsiders when you open your door. They are also pretty good at keeping bugs out. However the only places I ever really see them in America is in the deep south and even then only rarely. }

He’s not far wrong. In a SHTF situation, if a bad guy in a pack gets even close to the home, the homeowner is screwed because in no time flat, the guy can break a window and let himself in.

I’m not defending Messico, but there is a reason why there are bars on nthe doors and windows. It’s because most of the people don’t use air conditioning and the windows are always open, even when they are asleep.
