Eight states broke warmth records and no state was colder than average.
Two states had their wettest Mays.
May 2018 was the hottest of any May in 124 years of recording keeping for the continental United States, eclipsing the extreme heat of that month in the 1930s during the Dust Bowl era.
The average temperature for the Lower 48 states last month was 65.41 degrees Fahrenheit, 5.21 degrees Fahrenheit above the 1901-2000 average, according to the state of the climate report released by NOAA on Wednesday.
That knocked out May 1934 for the warmest May on record. Rounding out the top five warmest Mays are 1936, 2012 and 2000.

Not in the upper midwest assmunch.
I guess weather is not the same as climate when the weather doesn't look like what they want it to look like, and it is the same as climate when it conforms to their narrative.
NYC and LI had five days above normal in May and 20 days below normal. I had to turn the heat on two weeks ago to get the chill out of the house
Colder here than normal in Eastern California in May, snow, sleet, etc.
May have happened in the lower 48, but not here in lower New Jersey - rainy and chilly most of the month - and today is like September - better check their data.....
It was 69 degrees here today and the spring has been generally cool. How come every time that happens some clown in the media comes along and tells me how hot it is?
Had to turn the heat on here in NH. Woke up to low 40s.
Just because we take our clothes off when we watch the Weather Channel doesn’t mean we believe your global warming stiere scheisse.
Quite warm here in Tennessee since the first of May.
THANK GOD!! The next Ice Age will KILL us all, anything we can do to prolong the start is a good thing.
Hmmm .. then why has my back-yard pool only warmed up enough for us to be able to swim for maybe 3 days so far this “Spring”? ... and now it’s back down to below 70 degrees again after a week of gloom and rain.
Aieeeee! Weather is happening!!!!
I wore jackets a few days in early May, and I saw people wearing sweatshirts and light jackets this very morning.
This “warmest May on record” nonsense must be the result of tortured and twisted statistics.
April and May in SF Bay Area were cold.
Hubs kept having to turn on the heater in the morning to shower.
We went into the second tier on our PGE bill for crying out loud!
I guarantee to everybody the numbers have been cooked.
