Barbara Mikulski's advice to an ailing Baltimore: 'Stop whining'

The best way to move Baltimore forward from its blight, unemployment and horrific three-year cycle of violent crime and record homicide rates is to stand up to it with gusto.

"Stop whining and start winning," retired U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski told a group of about 75 business leaders at an informal panel Wednesday afternoon downtown. The event was sponsored by the Baltimore Efficiency and Economy Foundation, a nonprofit centered on civic advocacy, and held at 750 E. Pratt St.

Mikulski took the microphone after nearly an hour and a half discussion about how the city could turn itself around and move forward.

Titled "Preparing Baltimore for the next Amazon opportunity," the group that included developer Thibault Manekin, Parks and People President Lisa Millspaugh Schroeder and urban researcher Seema Iyer spoke of ways to fix the city and move it on a stronger path toward the future.

"Amazon was a grand slam. Why don't we go for singles and doubles? Let's think about that," Mikulski said, of the city's bid to lure the internet retailing giant to select Baltimore as its location for a second North American headquarters or HQ2.

The city's bid was rejected in February, but Mikulski implored the leaders to seek out other corporations to move to Baltlimore.

"I believe one of the first things we do is stop whining."

Mikulski, a Democrat, retired in January 2017 after 30 years in the Senate. The former social worker and City Councilwoman took the microphone and started wagging her finger at the room urging the city's business and elected leaders to "look at the assets that the city has that will not move on."

"Look at the waterfront — and we have more than one at

Sad to say, an episode of urban unrest, can wipe out years and years of efforts towards economic development and growth. A few days of rioting can override whatever efforts have been made.

BAM!

No one wants to talk about the difficult issues. Infrastructure is easy, relatively.

She should lead the way. Go down to the Black no-go zones in Baltimore
and see how long she lasts.

Baltimore is the Detroit of the US East Coast. No thanks to its government, Baltimore missed out on being a bedroom community for the many Federal workers around Washington, DC.

If you find yourself in Baltimore, being raped or murdered by an African American, please try to stop whining.

Just off the top of my head...

Approximately half of the city is a no-go zone... Sure there are nice enclaves sprinkled here and there, but they are the exception and not the rule.

The police department is half the strength it was ten years ago; no wonder when you have a mayor and a states’ attorney who do not support the PD.

City property taxes are exorbitant...

The city schools quite frankly, are a disgrace. If you have a family you would want your kids in private school. The better ones in the area - kindergarten through grade 12 - can cost $20K per annum.

I was born in Baltimore and lived there till 18. I’ve been back here for one year after being away for forty... In sum I would say the city is dying. I dont see how it can be turned around.

As for Mikulski, she was in Washington for what, forty years? Why didn’t she do something when she had some real power?

Figures Butterball would tell business people to stop whining.

I was hoping she told the thugs and enablers of Baltimore to stop whining...about racism, poverty, etc.

"If you find yourself in Baltimore, being raped or murdered by an African American, please try to stop whining."

Yeah. Think of it as reparations or something. Check your privilege.

Good summation. Mikulski was the “pride of the Polish” in Baltimore re politics (except for “American Joe”. However, the City Council she served on was still liberal, significantly anti-business (re taxes, regulations, etc) and caved in to the Black Political Machine too often.

I go back in Baltimore to the 40’s and can tell you neighborhood by neighborhood what happened. I can also tell you what helped destroy a significant part of the white middle class businesses - Pelosi’s brother, the Mayor, D’Alessandro, during the 1968 riots, gave into them and their black political supporters instead of suppressing it, putting the out of state rioters in jail, and given the order to “Shoot to kill” for arsonists and looters.

He let the small businesses of the Jewish working/middle class get looted and burned to the ground, which not only put many of these white businessmen (including people I knew) out of work, but also their black workers, many of whom had been with the businesses for decades (like our top man had been - 50 years).

The first black mayor of Baltimore, Curt Schmoke, was the president of my largely white boys club and my high school. He was being trained by some very good people to be the “New Black Hope” but he was compromised by the Black Political Machine (communists, liberals, crooks, etc - Murphys, Little Willie Adams, the Mitchell Communist/Crime family, and others, aided by a slowly declining white political machine that had helped keep the city running.

Literally all the businesses we knew and dealt with from the 1950’s thru the 80’s are gone (and not replaced). So too were the jobs associated with them as well as many of the services they provided. The tragedy was that young black men were not encouraged to get an education so that they could either buy an ongoing business when the owners retired, or start their own. No black business; no black middle class.

Drugs, corruption, incompetence, uncaring, stupid, and greedy politicians, mainly black, destroyed what white Mayor Schaeffer tried to do to save a lot of inner-city Baltimore. If it weren’t for the Wharf area, most white businesses would have fled for Owings Mills, Towson, or Hunt Valley in greater numbers than they did.

Baltimore gave us Sen. Mikulski, stupid Sen. Cardin, Communist Parren Mitchell (there is more to him than is publicly known), Rep. Cummings, and a couple of other clowns.

They sure did a lot to keep the city in good shape - NOT!

End of story.

A once beautiful and economically sound city has been, like Detroit, parts of Chicago, NY before Guliani/Bloomberg, Cleveland, Philadelphia (what a shithole it has become since I lived there, where even the slums were in better condition than now), San Fransicko, Oakland, and now Seattle and Portland, turned into a near economic basketcase.

If you want to know why this happened, just look at which political party ruled and ruined them. I can guarantee it wasn’t the Liberatians.

When you look back on it, it is absolutely incredible of the unemployable trash that has filled its halls and never held a job in private industry.

The last Mayor of Baltimore worth the name was William Donald Schaefer.
