Old software, no matter how good or widespread its use, doesn’t put money in the bank. This is also why MS are obsessively hounding everyone to go to Office365 which is a subscription service and - again - a steady revenue stream. In fact, attempting to navigate the Office section of the MS site is a nightmare for those who have no interest in the 365 model - of course, this behavior is intentional.

Thanks - I believe you're right on this - insightful.

But now that you shined light on what's happening my concern is that other companies could work to do the same. Honda would love to have the power to tell mechanics they are NOT allowed to repair cars older than 4 years - forcing citizens to buy new cars or risking their lives. Or refrigerators with chips that freeze the motors up after 3 years... forcing citizens to replace something they're happy with... I suspect there's a solution out there or other companies would be doing the same as MS.

The Microsoft MVP community will still be active on all these forums.

If you have any issue, flag an MVP for that product. The MVPs have direct access to the Microsoft program managers and engineers on their various topics, and can get you the answer, if they themselves cannot provide it.

Honestly, I’d much rather hear from an experienced American MVP than a Microsoft employee at the help desk in India.

I am an MVP, and we’re still very much active in the forums (# of right answers go to MVP “points” for some who don’t do other things).

To find a Microsoft MVP directly, go to: https://www.mvp.microsoft.com/en-us/MvpSearch?cr=YourRegion

And corporate IT departments do not like Windows 10, notably in any company involved in engineering. Maybe it’s time for the business sector to tell Microsoft “screw you, we’re going to UNIX”.

I was listening to Dan Patrick, of all people, doing his sports radio show but he touches on many other topics.

He mentioned he had a relative or a friend who worked for an appliance company. That person openly stated that pieces and parts were designed to last no more than 4-5 years and that replacements would be made intentionally expensive and/or greater than the residual value of the appliance itself.

I just replaced my ten year old home machine that ran Windows Vista with a new Dell running Win10 Home Premium.

In spite of the jokes and comparing Vista with Windows ME (some of which I've made myself,) I never had a lick of trouble with Vista. The only reason I finally replaced my machine was because of Chrome no longer updating for Vista, and TurboTax no longer loading under Vista.

Otherwise, a ten year old PC with dual core processors was still doing everything I needed to have done. I could have loaded Windows 10 on it, but I didn't trust the hardware to last much longer. I've already replaced the power supply once, and rigged up fans inside to compensate for the dead fan on the video card.

In many respects, PC hardware has plateaued, and changes to the OS are just for the sake of change.

Yuo can get really cheap video cards- they aren’t hard at all to install-

“After trying to set up one, all the personal info and accounts you have to set up with MS I gave up. (I never did see Win10 loaded on the thing.) They are going back.”

Here’s a tip: get Windows 10 Professional instead of Home edition. With Pro, there is an option during setup to go with a “Domain User” instead of a Microsoft user. Pick that, and just give it any user name and password you like, and it will just create a local Windows user for you. It will make you confirm again that you do not want to set it up with an online account, but it won’t force you to do it.

Had my 7 in the shop last week and the guy said he has a lot of customers, like me, who are trying to get ever ounce of life out of their 7 computers because they hate 10. Gates is trying his hardest to run off customers. He already ran off hubby to Linux when an unwanted 10 decided to download into his 7 and murdered it.

Ok, so would someone please walk me through how to put the little house icon (My computer or whatever 10 calls it now) up on the start up page of this @$^(&%@)*^? I spend all day trying to find anything on this new 10 and have decided the non existent little house icon may be part of the problem. If I could navigate that thing a bit more, I might not cuss it so much.

Yeah, follow the money. Where’s the solitaire games? Where’s Word? Had to get a similar Word on line but it’s not that good. Why can’t I play my old games? Why can’t I disable that search engine that looks like it should be internet explorer but isn’t? Oh, yeah, I know, they want you to use google. $$$$$$$$$$

Same with ink cartriges that still have ink in them but won’t let them to be used after x number of printings even if you refill them. $$$$$$$$$$

Hubby doesn’t want to sell his motorcycle but may have to because he can’t find parts for it anymore.

More garbage for the landfills and pollution to make new appliances. Not to mention globull warming. The treehuggers should get on that bandwagon. That would bring a lot of support they’re missing out on.

Wonder what UNIX costs these days. Used to be a bundle back in the day.

Free. Linux is Unix, for all practical purposes.

Yup. How much processing speed do home users really need? Not nearly as much as they think. The only way to generate revenue is through planned obsolescence. I'm pretty much a power user as I always have a bunch of stuff all running simultaneously. Last year I discovered when I try to upgrade VMWare workstation, (not a cheap program) that I couldn't because VMWare no longer supports the processor for my system. It's an i7 CPU (930), and isn't supported apparently because of some newer virtualization instructions they now require aren't a part of that chipset. Yeah, it's a 1st gen "bloomfield", but it's still a freaking i7. So, in order to upgrade the software, I have to upgrade my CPU. Well, that's not going to happen for a while, so VMWare will have to wait for a while for more money from me.

I just haven't seen any indication that I'm going to get much bang for my buck in an upgrade. I've been using Linux for a long time, so I've generally upgraded about once every 7-10 years. In the past, there has always been a huge jump in tech, processor power, and memory management from one generation of my desktop to the next. I'm just really not seeing the likelihood of that kind of boost even if I were to upgrade to the latest and greatest processor. I saw a bit of a bump up when I swapped out my hard drive for a SSD, but I doubt even a full system upgrade will be even that much more impressive.

I just went and looked at my original receipt for this system and am kind of surprised that I put it together in November of 2010. Time flies!

It’s not gonna happen for me. I’ll stick with Windows 7 even after MS stops supporting it.

“That sucks because this Win7 machine is about done. Not sure what’s next.”

I left MS when they first FORCED all new computers to be W10.

I purchased a Mac, the latest version of Parallels (the Mac came from B&H Photo and Parallels was free - I would have purchased it) and then bought a Windows 7 System Builder DVD.

Once your Mac is running, insert Parallels and it will guide you through the process (very easy) of loading the Windows OS.

These days the W 8.1 System Builder is less expensive and when it is installing it allows you to have either the ‘tile’ look or the classic look - go classic.

Now you have a Windows computer INSIDE your Mac (make sure you turn off updates after you update to IE 11).

Both OS’s work seemly with each other and it’s easy to copy and paste.

Do Macs cost more? Laptops: YES. If your computer is NOT mobile look at a Mac Mini (starting from $499 - you really should have 8+ GB RAM for Parallels).

Don’t overlook the Apple Refirb Store with as-new warranties (Mac Mini’s from $419):
https://www.apple.com/shop/browse/home/specialdeals/mac

I have done this with many of my clients and they have very few issues compared to W10 issues.

Good luck, FRiend.

“Yup. How much processing speed do home users really need? Not nearly as much as they think...”

I agree, however when I buy a Blu-Ray disc I rip it and import it into iTunes.

To play the movie it’s easy to grab a small remote, browse through 500+ movies and press play. NO searching for a particular disc. Easy and fast.

It takes quite a bit of processing, however. The last movie I imported took a total of eight hours, seven with the processor at full-tilt.

I am one of the exceptions.
