Fallout may be one of the biggest AAA gaming franchises around, but over the last few years the post-apocalyptic series has found itself in turmoil. What started out as a gritty narrative-driven role-playing game has, with the release of 2016s Fallout 4, transformed into more of a silly action game. And with the reveal of Fallout 76 at E3 this year, some fans are convinced the series has fully lost its way.
Veteran fans are disappointed with this news, because theyre used to playing meaty, narrative-driven single-player RPGs without being harassed by other people. Given that Bethesda introduced these new concepts by stating that some of your fellow survivors may not be neighborly, it sounds like theyre expecting Fallout 76 to be a chaotic experience, rather than an introspective one.
Already, the reaction to Fallout 76 leans negative within more hardcore circles. On the Fallout Reddit, one of the top threads is titled You can play solo, but you SHOULD play multiplayer! will ruin the franchise. On Twitter, fans are debating back and forth whether or not Fallout 76 will ruin the series, too. And on the ResetEra forum, posters seem split on whether or not online will make for a good Fallout experience.
Im fairly certain this new title wont take story or lore very seriously, one fan in the Reddit thread lamented. The sad part is that 95 percent of us wont be bombing each other, another wrote. Its the stupid ass five percent which will ruin the game for us.
sweet little lies ping
They’ll probably make it a battle royale type of game next, seems that is whats white hot now.
Wow, what I *DON’T* want to play is WarCraft.
Todd seems to insist that I *DO*, in the guise of Fallout.
Hate to sign off of a franchise, but they forced it on me. I’ll see what my next franchise will be.
Ping me if you find a new franchise worth following.
Thanks.
I’ll stick with EVE Online
NOW the game sounds interesting to me...
Eh... well, I thought ESO was a total flop. It was a great theme park experience... but the alarming amount of bots and poor skill use design really killed it for me.
Hopefully they learned from that and will make a better game this time with Fallout... I feel they really should stick with singleplayer or just open up co-op, rather than make it some open multiplayer variant.
Waiting for Starfield and ES VI. Also, why couldn’t we have a 10th Anniversary Fallout 3 SE?
Fallout took a nosedive after New Vegas. Especially with using an old and buggy game engine and crappy writing. FO4 was terribly disappointing. And it looks like 'ol Todd is going to screw the pooch again with 76. I guess he's angling to compete for a-hole game designer of the decade with Chris Roberts.
I aint skeered. I can see a base full of Free Republic players fighting off the Enclave.
I don’t get the criticism of Fallout 4. I do think Fallout New Vegas was a far superior game, but Fallout 4 was reasonable.
If they had taken Fallout New Vegas and built on that, Fallout 4 would have been much better. Still, I enjoyed it.
I just watched my kid complete FO3 again, this time with the DLCs. I loved both FO3 and FO4.
After what that woman did to Star Wars, I’m not sure I can sustain another big entertainment blow.
The killed Frank in Dead Rising (and now they are bringing him back).
They aren’t making any more Bioshock, which is still my all time favorite game franchise. Borderlands is OK.
I don’t know. These things make so much money and the people who bled for them get soft and lose focus. It happens.
My all time favorite game was Thief. I played some multiplayer games later, but felt like a rat in a maze.
I cant say for sure what attracted me to GTA initially, but I derive great pleasure from pissing other players off. This includes not only becoming the rabbit, but employing asymmetric techniques to gameplay when faced with others who equate “courage” to an online game where winning or losing is based on stats.
Based on the voice messages from disgruntled players having been roundly defeated, the game is populated by a large cabal of adult libs.
*smiling *
Some of which are, unfortunately, hackers...making online gameplay risky business these days.
Watched my kid play all the way through SuperHot.
THAT GAME is innovative. It’s a pure FPS, but with a massive twist.
Of all the games I’ve seen in the last decade, SuperHot is the most innovative and fun game. I include in that list Portal (which was awesome) and Super Meat Boy.
Portal and Unreal were 2 that I couldn’t recall.
Never heard of SuperHot. Looks interesting.
Written by Central Europeans, who are a plucky lot.
Not well done. Extremely well done. Real innovation in gaming on a budget.
