Hipsters have man buns, crusties have dreadlocks.

It’s good to live in a place that can have truly miserable weather for long stretches of time. Although I guess nowadays you can just hole up in a Starbucks if you need to.

“How DOES one differentiate between a ‘Crusty Punk’ and a trendy ‘Hipster?’ ;)

Easy. A crusty punk will drink a pabst blue ribbon because it is very cheap and about all he can afford. A hipster will pay $12 to drink a Pabst Blue Ribbon at a Kale bar because he thinks it makes him one of the people down for the struggle

I bet you are wrong my brother has chosen this lifestyle and has raised a family thanks to California ‘s generous welfare. he is able bodied, college educated, from one of the riches zip codes in US.with two loving full time parents with mid western values and religion. I think this lifestyle is love of socialism. They tell each other this is best and everyone owes them.

I think you are right. There is more than one side as others have noted. There are those who are mentally ill, those who are drugged out, those who can’t emotionally cope with society, and those who view this as trendy and a good way to avoid responsibility, or to live out a romanticized view of socialism.

Thanks for pointing this out with what I’m sure is a difficult personal experience.

Usually it also involves bad parenting.

As seen on TV?

I was bingeing on season one of Gotham last night. Selena(Catgirl) takes Bruce to the orphan underground or whatever it was. It was a commune, I think that’s what some of these kids are searching for. A community, but they cannot see the forest for the trees.

Vagrancy laws are not zealously enforced because any stringent vagrancy statutes get struck down as unconstitutional, since not owning a home can not be made a criminal offense in a free country.

As for the other laws targeting the unsavory habits of the homeless, those can be enforced, but I think it all comes down to how municipalities want to spend their resources. Those areas that have a big homeless problem also problem have more serious criminals that they would rather have the police focusing on.

” I think this lifestyle is love of socialism.”

This.

I know of a PHD who bags groceries for a living in Austin, lives extremely spartan, smokes tons of dope and espouses the virtues of socialism.

Perhaps but if the Obama years have taught us anything it’s that police and councils can be cowed into not enforcing the law to avoid specious claims of racism (even when the chief of police, sheriff, and deputies and officers are black).

In addition, spendthrift departments are now frittering cash away on all manner of candyfloss and trophy kit - PR campaigns, K-9 units wildly disproportionate to their actual need on the streets (if dog units are giving one elementary school talk after another then they are by definition surplus to requirements), APCs, one upgraded radio system after another, etc.

In short, I would agree with you if serious criminals were being apprehended, prosecuted and jailed. But bums are the human version of the broken window - if they aren’t being addressed then violence, drug sales and property crimes aren’t either in many cases.

“Doing what you are supposed to do” no longer even guarantees you even a crappy home. Most of their working peers have debt up to their eyeballs, work every waking hour and see no hope of ever raising a family. They are one missed paycheck from being homeless themselves.

Of course vagrancy is becoming a more attractive option. The worse case scenario is being locked up with 3 meals a day and more vagrant friends to meet

I was at a recent meeting in Ventura after a crazy, homeless guy stabbed and killed a tourist in a restaurant on the promenade. I said.....you can enforce that every single dog on the beach is on a leash, why can’t you enforce the no loitering, sleeping in the parks and harassing people laws?

Almost every deadbeat I know is smoking weed. I think it causes “deadbeatism”. Their existence is driven by getting more weed. I suspect most are selling weed but the cops don’t care anymore nor should they.

In DC, it is legal to smoke weed but not sell it. So the storefronts accept donations in exchange for free weed. My daughter thinks this is legal
