Cost to fill in Cambria Cavern with concrete totals more than half a million dollars (TX sink hole)

In May, Williamson County Engineer Terron Evertson said it will take at least 200 trucks of concrete to fill the cave. Tim Kelley, who lives near Cambira Cavern, told CBS Austin he is looking forward to the cave being filled in. His driveway access has been blocked for months, making mundane tasks like grocery shopping a hassle. Although the County says the caves do not pose a risk to homeowners nearby, Kelley said the unknown still makes him a bit uneasy. "Even if there is a 5% chance (the cave) goes under my house, that's still a big deal to worry about," said Kelley.

if the neighborhood sits on karst topography, they can’t “fix” anything.

those living there will, eventually, have to leave.

The bureaucrats in Texas are probably relatives of the pols just like everywhere else in this once great country. They can make it cost whatever they want so their pockets can be filled. I am surprised that the estimate is only half a mil. Here in the N.East part of the country it takes a half a mil just to make an estimate.

That is the rationale between trying to fill in the sinkholes. They have been doing that for years in and around I-76 in King of Prussia, PA.

Many a company man almost broke their company trying to cement a cavern during a surface casing job.

If you lose circulation, then use baskets on the casing above the cavern. A load of pea gravel should be planned.

Why not turn the cave into energy efficient (AC costs zero) houses for those who have houses above?

Turn it into a tourist attraction.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe a bar and restaurant would be a good idea.

Maybe they’ll find an indian’s bones in it and the whole area can be off limits.

Sell the nearby homes to the state. Make parking and fencing. Install stairs.

LOL, that is what THEY think.

Well, we have the power to do some things that are big, we can dam a river and such, but...I haven’t seen where we have the power to do anything about volcanoes and earthquakes....never mind the sun!

What did Clint Eastwood say in that movie? “A man’s gotta know his limits...”

Based on judgement, experience? Yeah. Depends on what the situation is. What my responsibilities will be.
