The fairways were widened and the greens were expanded ahead of the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, but so far none of that has helped some of the best in the world.
Heading into his back nine, Rory McIlroy was seven over and on the par-4 first hole he added another double-bogey to his scorecard to drop to nine-over. He has since added another bogey on the second hole and is now 10-over par.

After the fit that some golfers threw a few years ago about the conditions at Chambers Bay, I am a bit surprised that they’re playing the US Open in such a place.
But then again, Shinnecock Hills is more established than Chambers Bay was.

That description of changes at Shinnecock is misleading.
Actually the PGA has believed that (a) the U.S. open should be one of the most difficult PGA tournaments to win and (b) previous venious have been too easy to score double digits above par. Shinnecock was groomed to be sure it would be difficult.

I can’t stand it when I see scores like 20 under, that’s ridiculous.
I agree - I find more enjoyment seeing those who are doing good go about their business....of course, I have never been a true fan of anyone (except perhaps Arnie) or any team, so who knows what goes on in the heads of the “We gotta pull this one out or the world ends” folks?
