Hipster parents admit they regret their babies’ ‘cool’ names
The New York Post ^ | 06/13/18 | Rachelle Bergstein

Posted on 06/15/2018 5:05:19 AM PDT by Simon Green

Naomi Tomky was still laid out on the operating table after an emergency C-section when the earliest pangs of regret kicked in.

“The baby was being lifted over my head,” the 34-year-old freelance writer remembers, “and the anesthesiologist was like, ‘what’s her name?’ I started explaining and was like, oh God, what have I done?”

Tomky’s now 8-month-old daughter is Tove (pronounced TOH-vah), a Swedish moniker that’s typically said like TOO-vah, but in this case, the expectant parents from Seattle changed the pronunciation for a twist.

“My husband has Swedish heritage and then Tova, or Tovah, is a common Hebrew name, which I liked because I’m Jewish,” says the mother of two, laughing. “When I was pregnant, we loved the idea of combining them. Now we know we doomed her to a life of spelling it for other people.”

Would-be adventurous parents, take note: The name that calls out like a siren’s song from the page of a baby book might turn strident upon repetition. Baby name shame is real, and with unusual appellations such as Kairo and Zayd (for boys) and Oaklynn and Paisleigh (for girls) on the rise — per the Social Security Administration’s most recent fastest-growing baby names report, released in May — it’s likely to become an increasingly common phenomenon.

“People are working a lot harder to come up with a name that is really distinctive and has a lot of personal meaning,” says Pamela Redmond Satran, co-founder and CEO of baby naming site Nameberry.com.

Thank goodness my grandkids all have normal names.

That is, if you consider Greek names “normal” - my Son-in-Law is Greek. At least one of their names (first or middle) is Greek; my daughter picked their other name, and it’s more “American”. Personally, I think the Greek names are beautiful (I won’t name them here for privacy’s sake - just say they’re not far-fetched with many syllables; they came from members of his extended family).

And you don’t see a lot of Nebuchadnezzars, Haggais, or Abednegos either.

Shadrach, Mishach and Abednego are at least people you’d not be ashamed to have as namesakes. Pontius might be a bit of a problem ...

Say didn’t George Foreman name all his kids George? Takes all the hassle about deciding upon a name.

Children who are named after nobody, struggle to feel any connection to anybody. A wholly unhealthy trend afoot for years, and the offices of shrinks are full of Jared’s, Jason’s and Jacob’s, who have no idea who they are. Better to be named after parents, or uncle John, and feel like part of a family.

“When Jonita Davis, a writer and mother of six, married her husband in 1998, they were still teenagers, and they were both candid about dreams for the future.”

Funny article. So, Jonita had SIX KIDS when she married her husband in 1998.

“I have a better idea: Read your Bible. Find names there.”

When I was very young, I once asked my mom why they gave me and my sibling such boring names. She stated something to the effect “you’ll have enough to deal with in your life, you don’t your name adding to that”.

And yes, the FIRST PLACE we went for naming our kids was the Bible. The names are timeless and beautiful.

If you haven’t figured out that “cool” won’t whitewash the henhouse by the time you’re 21, you will suffer as a Democrat for awhile or forever.

A friend joked that he wanted to name his daughter “Crystal Chanda”. His last name is “Lear”.

Bill Lear, founder of Lear Jet, named one of his daughters Shanda. Stories that he named another daughter Gonda are apocryphal.

I suggested that for our youngest daughter. My husband mixed it as no one would ever be able to pronounce it. Rejected Aine ( Awn-ya) for the same reason. I’m sure our little Ruari will have no problems;-).

If you really wanted to throw a wrench (almost like something you'd see in the Lemony Snicket books) into the works, there are these possible female names: Anaphylaxis, Anhedonia, and (my favorite of this bunch of three) Echolalia.

Somehow I doubt there'd be a great many takers.

Bergstein is upset with whites naming based on Euro heritage.

Its somehow threatening.

She would never detail the ridiculous urban names we are all expected to unblinkingly put up with.
