23-foot python swallows woman tending her vegetable garden

A 23-foot-long python has swallowed a woman in central Indonesia, a village official said Saturday.

The victim, 54-year-old Wa Tiba, went missing while checking her vegetable garden near her village on Muna island in Southeast Sulawesi province on Thursday evening, according to the village chief, Faris.

On Friday, her family went to look for her at the garden but found only her belongings, including sandals and a flashlight, said Faris, who uses a single name.

The family and villagers launched a search for the woman, and found the snake with a bloated belly about 50 yards from where her belongings were found.

The villagers killed the snake and carried it to the village.

"When they cut open the snake's belly they found Tiba's body still intact with all her clothes," Faris said. "She was swallowed first from her head."

(snip)

It was the second python attack on a human in Indonesia since March last year, when a 25-year-old man was swallowed whole by a python in West Sulawesi province.

A big constrictor snake can suffocate you to death and eat you afterwards.

This is. really a freak thing.

“Aren’t these horrible snakes in the Everglades now?”

Is that where Charlie Crist moved?

Those in Florida are Burmese Pythons. This was a reticulated python, so, no worries. /s

Well, if one calls crushing and breaking every bone in your chest suffocating....they constrict tighter at every exhalation.

No. A worse one. The Burmese Python is running amok in the Everglades.

RIP. I hope she fell down and was unconscious or something. But I don’t think most people realize just how hard they squeeze, if I recall they can break bones, squeeze shut the heart valves and give brain embolisms. So maybe it would be fast.

here’s something from the interweb so it is true for sure:

” Working with National Geographic, he measured constriction in an 18-foot long anaconda. The pressures this snake could exert could cause cerebral aneurysms, or snap the backbone of a large animal like a capybara or a deer. Moon thinks that these large snakes aren’t deliberately breaking the backs of their prey – it’s just a fortuitous side effect of their size and the mass of muscle they use in the squeeze. The cerebral aneurysms are probably what they’re really after.”

They probably want the prey dead as fast as possible so they don’t get injured. I read one theory is that snakes might squeeze mammals so much longer than they need to because it is leftover from when all prey had reptile and amphibian nervous systems.

Reason number 68 to always keep a sturdy knife on your person that you can operate with one hand. You bet bit and wrapped up, start stabbing everything that ain’t yours.
