In the new research, an international team pinned down the missing third, finding it in the space between galaxies. That lost matter exists as filaments of oxygen gas at temperatures of around 1 million degrees Celsius...


i.e. they’ve found hell. It’s between the galaxies.

Not really. There’s so little gas for the volume that it occupies that you’d still freeze out there. Temperature as used by astronomers is more accurately used as a measure of energy. So really, it’s a tiny amount of gas spread across thousands of miles that vibrates really really fast.
