What a great example for the American male. Thank you, Marshall Dillon.

One of the cool folks for sure, true patriot. The monster in ‘The thing from another world.’ He would take lunch and drive around with the make-up on, which was bright green I guess. He must have been shot 60+ times in the right shoulder alone on Gunsmoke. The scar tissue should have been like Kevlar at some point.

Aw geez, Clint Walker and now Ja,mes Arness, two patriotic giants of the classic era of Holly-weird.
IIRC, he was "The Thing" in the first version of that movie.
Now, we have runts like Cruise. Damon, and K. Sutherland.
All good things end, but so soon? Runts and metrosexuals now are the norm for male actors. Clint Eastwood is one of the few remaining.

His brother Peter Graves also served in WWII.

Arness had a supporting role in the 1949 classic “Battleground”.

I enjoy listening to “Gunsmoke” on Sirius XM Radio Classics where William Conrad played Matt Dillon. But I always visualize the character as James Arness in my theater of the mind.

Edward Albert, the Green Acres guy saw some serious action in WWII. You watch these guys on TV, as a kid, being stuffy old coots and then you find out where they were and what they saw in the war...and you juse can’t put the two together.

The opening showdown for Gunsmoke was ne of the great signature scenes in early TV.

I have every episode of Gunsmoke. Best western series ever. The writers were outstanding in their ability to portray just how difficult it was to survive in the West of the 1800s. God rest his soul.

You bring back fond memories. Gunsmoke was a broadcast seldom missed by dad. Jim Arness was always a favorite.
Years ago,Bill O’Reilly had this interview with Jim - IMHO, one of his best.

Something in the story doesn’t pass the smell test.
IF Arness died at 88, than he was born in 1930.
If he was born in 1930, and the Anzio invasion took place in 1944,
THAN Arness would have been 14 when Anzio took place.
Participating in a major military invasion overseas at 14?
Maybe not????
